A question....HOT ROCKS!!!!!!

Old Katz

New member
On yesterdays hunt I hit a large area of ground that gave more than
a heck of a lot of HOT ROCK readings. No matter where I put the coil
HOT ROCKS came up. I went back to where the ground was clean,
GB'ed the machine. Ground balanced with switch on ground, then flipped the
switch to Track. Din't seem to help. I even cut back the sensitivity. I'm
surprised the 6x10DD didn't help. Any recommendations?

On an MXT,certain types of targets can produce a -95"hot rock"response. What are called "hot rocks" and how the MXT responds to them, will vary, based on whether a discrimination mode(coin&jewelry or relic mode)or Prospecting mode is being used.
In COIN&JEWELRY mode(and RELIC mode), a"hot rock" is a rock with iron mineralization content that has a different VDI number from the surrounding ground.Material based on carbon mineralization, like coal, coke,or charcoal may be detected, but these typically show up as a positive VDI target. These materials are not magnetic.
For the MXT's -95 "HOT ROCK" indication to be given, the rock must have magnetic(iron)characteristics,
In cases where a -95 response is very weak, but repeatable at different sweep angles,it may be worth digging because,in iron based soil mineralization, very weak,(deep)non-iron targets may mimic -95 hot rock responses.
From all I've learned (read)a true HOT ROCK is typically a iron laced rock,so it seems to me in analyzing the target, switching to alternate relic, would give you more insight as to your target, also switching to prospect mode will give iron probability of target.
The DFX from what I've read while looking for answers to your question has a menu setting that allows for varying degrees of detector response rather than a typical accept or reject.

It may be possible that the large area you described had coal clinkers or similar spread or mixed into it at one time which would put a concentration of targets reading "hot rock" in the area. Just a thought.

I was thinking of coal also. Or possibly there could have been an old blacksmith barn in its time there. Can't tell you why......sorry, Nancy

I used to ignore the hot rocks signals and then found after digging a few of them, that they were actually deep civil war bullets. If you get a lot of hot rocks signals in a particular area, I would dig one or two to see what you actually get.

I have the same problem in my local park Old Katz, 95% of VDIs are hot rocks. I've just learned to live with it. We have red soil.
