A Question From a "Newbie"...

I picked up a Silver Sabre Plus for $35 the other night. I got to try it out for a little while yesterday, so I took it to a park near my office during lunchtime. It may not have been the best environment for me to try it. I have never been to the site with my high end detectors, so I am very unfamiliar with the site and what to expect. I found the remains of at least 5 or 6 very old structures in the woods that I would date back at least to the early 1800's. From what I have read there were lime furnaces in the area, and this may have been one of the areas that it was mined. The problem was that there was soooo much iron that the SSP was overwhelmed, even when the sensitivity was lowered all the way.

While in this "hostile" environment, I noticed that there was nulling of the threshold while in the All Metal mode. Could this have been caused by overload? It worked fine when I tried it on some coins that I planted once I got to cleaner ground. My only other guess was that the coil threshold may be drifiting due to its age.

Any help is appreceiated.

I agree. Try it in several other spots to see how it acts.

Sounds like it's suffering from masking because of the excessive iron.
Far as I know, could happen to every machine.

Probably not too many 'precious' targets in association with a lime kiln...
I can't imagine it as being a site where coins would be passing back and forth, frequently.

Can't see that there would have been much glory with such an operation back then,
but you may try searching some of the outlying areas where the workers socialized a bit ?

Good luck
