You've probably heard something like this a hundred times. But I really need some opinions from folks I know and whom have, at least, some similar interests and needs! So here I go...
I went to a site called Digital Camera HQ which lists the top 5 popular cameras as...
Most Popular Digital Cameras
1. Canon 300D
2. Canon S50
3. Canon A70
4. Canon G3
5. Olympus C-750
But they didn't even mention several cameras you guys say YOU use...

WHAT I THINK (?) I NEED IN A CAMERA

If I'm gonna replace my good (but very old) 35mm to get a digital I want to STILL get nice personal photos (my wife's big on those), scenery from my detecting trips, zoom capability (doesn't have to go to the moon, though) and (of course) macro to show off finds (which I've NEVER been able to do!). But (and here's the major issue) I DON'T want (and can't afford) to spend a fortune on another complicated toy.

Now, maybe that info alone is enough to give you some idea of what might work for me.
I have two other questions for you, if you don't mind:
1) In regards to those top 5 cameras listed above... Does that mean "most bought" or best liked AFTER buying?
And...
2) Is it even POSSIBLE to get what I'd like for just a few hundred dollars?!! There's a HUGE amount of hype out there and I'm lost in it.
Of course that doesn't even begin to touch the "extras" I hear about:
- Royal recommended getting the Digital Cameras for Dummies book. $
- Someone else recommended getting Adobe Photoshop LE to play with photos. $$
- Others say you need extra "cards" to take enough pictures! $$$
Several folks in one photo forum I visited said to get the Sony CyberShot DSC-F717 for $1,000 retail! Yeaahhh...RIGHT!!!
I find the photo forums I've tried to visit elsewhere just more confusing (and rather belittling to "newbies") than they were helpful.
Sheesh! I find this whole subject more daunting than when I first wanted to get into metal detecting!!!
I posted this in the Views and forum too, in case someone else could help there.
Thanks for reading and REALLY THANKS for replying!

Art -- I was in the same situation as you. I spent quite a bit of time on the internet looking for a good inexpensive camera. Someone on one of these forums took pictures with his camera which is a Fuji FinePix A303. After doing all my research I found it was the camera for me. I got a real good deal on ebay when I bought mine. It is new in the box with warranty for UNDER $200.00. Go to ebay and do a search on "fuji finepix a303" and you will see everyone who is selling these cameras.
Am I sorry I bought this camera? Not one bit. It's a great camera. It's small, takes great pics and I don't have to carry around my 35mm stuff any more.
Go the the link below for a complete review of this camera along with test pictures you can check out. Wait for this link to load as it's quite an extensive review.

I just bought a new Fuji s5000 and so far I'm happy with it. I paid 335.00 on e-bay and that was with a kit. Case,32mb xd card, cleaner and more.It don't have a super close up but still not bad. this was taken with it.

This is normal and then it had a 10x zoom with 2 times digital zoom.

Art, I've been shooting 35mm since the early 60s when I was in the service. I've had a couple of Sony Mavica's and recently bought an HP 850 off of e-bay.
Listed as new and sold for less than half of msrp.
Camera features:
SLR like design.
Viewport or lcd display for framing the photo
4.1 megapixels (reproduce to 16X20 if full resolution) (not tested but some nice 8 X 10s)
7x optical zoom
8x digital zoom for combined 56x
56x shoots about a 100K photo.
Macro setting, but not adequate for coins. (my opinion)(Scanner does an excellent job on coins)
I am really happy with the results I've been getting with the camera. The original storage was only 16mb, but I purchased a separate 256mb sandisk (small memory card) and can shoot about 120 really nice resolution shots.
The camera burns AA batteries but I got some 1800 mhr nickel metal-hydide (NIMH) rechargeables and keep one set on the charger and one in the camera. Works great.
I can send you a couple LARGE shots via e-mail if you are interested in seeing the quality. Will take a while to send as I only have a dialup. (boonies) Let me know if you are interested.
Total investment around $450 - 475 for all of it.
- Less than Shelley's MXT probably.

Buy the Canon G3 Then buy the accessory wide angle and telephoto lens.
