A question for you coin experts. :confused:

Dug this 1917 Wheatie the other day and just noticed the number 8 stamped into Lincoln. Anybody know what it is? Did the Mint stamp this with an 8? Some kind of counter-stamp? Could this be rare? Thanks for any help.:confused:
 
I doubt it's from the mint. I've seen pennies with numbers stamped on them used as tokens before -- maybe that's what it is?
 
.Why would you say "no doubt" its from the mint? In my mind there is plenty of doubt. I have never seen a huge number like that stamped on a coin.How would a mint die do something like that?
Any meatwhisle out there with a set of number punches could have done this, seems more likely to me.

Can you give a better,,,close up picture?
 
OOps,,, my bad, just reread the post above. Thought it said "no dought its from the mint". Huh,,, sry. Only had one cup of coffee this morning.
 
YEARS AGO, I WOULD SPONSOR KIDDIE HUNTS, NUMBERING 10 PENNIES BY HAND STAMPING, 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 AND BURYING THEM AT VARIOUS LOCATIONS WITHIN A AREA, KIDS WOULD HUNT FOR THEM, AND WHATEVER NUMBER THEY FOUND IT WOULD CORRESPOND TO A PRIZE GIVEN.

THIS IS A GREAT LITTLE PROMOTION BY A CLUB, TO GET THE KIDDIES INTERESTED IN MD'ING.
