A question for Nancy

How "hot" do you try to run your MXT? I'm curious as to how you set your MXT up for coin and jewelry hunting.I'm new to the MXT Pro and still have tons to learn. This sure is a fun detector to hunt with.Bill

Hi Bill,

Let's see...... Honestly I don't run it "hot". When I'm hunting older properties, I am shooting for older coins. I have the gain set at 8. If more than that, it gets a bit noisy for me. I do have the SunRay Pro headphones and that helps me hear the small tiny little beeps for the deep coins. I also hunt in the relic mode with underneath trigger forward. Now when I'm hunting clad coins in the park or playgrounds, I do use the coin/jewelry mode. As for the gain, I keep it down to 6 since most clad coins and rings are only about 3-4 inches deep if that. That way there's less noise also. You still get a good signal that's easily heard when you come across a coin that's 5" deep . I would set the discrimination (dual control) at 2. This will let you get gold rings, pull-tabs and nickels too. If you don't want to get those items, put your disc. on 6-7. As for the threshold, turn it down to where you can hardly hear it. GO GO GO!!!!!!

I hope this helps. HH and good luck with your MXT Pro. You're going to love it more each time you use it.

The MXT Pro is not the same as the old MXT, with the trigger locked forward, just locks the unit in all metal mode in the C & J and Relic mode.
In the Prospecting mode, the trigger squeezed or locked forward,, disables ground tracking, same as using the Grab button..

I run my MXT at about 7 or 8. Running it hotter is ok but not
always benificial. Sometimes you have to lower the sensitivity due to ground conditions.
I also use the 6x10DD. I almost never use the stock coil anymore.

My question for Nancy is sweep speed. I have a lot of junk out here in portland and I think I may be moving either slow or fast. I read Jeff Fosters book and the manuel that comes with my MXT Pro and it sometimes confuses me. I have tried a test garden and what I found is that ninety percent of the time I do not get a response on neither silver or gold, even with my coil hanging over the top of the target. I bury my targets about five inches down. Funny though. I pick up all of the iron and hotrocks plus the tin foil. I can not figure out what I am doing wrong. I am new to this hobby and your help would be vastly appreciated.

not to take away from nancy but ya got Monte right there in portland with ya. he'd be the best help in that he knows the ground and the way the machines need to be adjusted for it. Nancy is adjusting for her ground. might be the same. might not. Monte is always inviting folks to call him if ya need help. you can go to n.w. detector sales and click on links. there's a new link to a monthly meeting invite with his number.
it's for anyone who wants to go detecting and get with monte and others for any help ya need.

had to add to this responce. i remembered someone on the garrett site saying he had the same problem on finding a dime he buried. he tried a xlt or mxt, i can't remember which, and another machine. two high end machines couldn't find the dime at 5". it was put in sideways and against the wall of the hole. he got his
ace 250 out and it didn't have any problem picking up the dime.

Nancy asked me to step in here........:help: Most White's detectors are what is considered a fast swing detector, the faster the swing, the deeper it will detect. Of course that comes with limitations and common sense. In discrimination mode, the coil must be moving to generate a response from a target. If you are "hovering" your coil over a target, it must be in All Metal, (pinpoint) mode to hear the target. When deep hunting and you get a suspected target but not sure, try what is known as the "wiggle" making very short, fast passes over the target. That might help bring a better audio signal when the target is isolated from nearby trash combined with a short fast swing over the target. If the target sounds better with the "wiggle", dig it and if the audio get worse, it is often trash. I hope this helps some.

I thought I might add the Discrimination Mode is also known as Motion Mode and All Metal (pinpointing) Mode is also known as Non-motion Mode.

I tried your solution on sweep speed. I thought that I was going to fast , but when I started to move I found my gold and silver targets easily. Holy cow, you can almost run with this thing. Thanks again for the help. I already contacted Bob at Northwest and will be in touch with Monte.

Im with Nancy, I notice when running the machine too hot that I can miss small targets, specially on trashy areas

I've done well with the gain at the factory preset, but in most of my hunting areas I can usually run up to at least +1 with no problems or excess noise while using the 6X10.
