a question for Monte re-G2

powerwalker

New member
Hi Monte
my names Pete and i,m from northern Ireland
I recently bought a G2
the question i would like to ask you is when you did you re original field test you said you used a prototype which would have been the first software version
the reason i ask you this is as follows
the forum that i go on Rogers Relics there was a discus ion on the difference between the G2 and the gold bug the conclusion was apart from the stem setup they where the same
then some guy asked how come when he switched on his G2 it said Golbug a few others had the same problem another guy said it didn't matter as long as it was the latest version
which he said was version 3 and the way to find out was to hold the gg button turn on the machine and it should say 2.9 or 3
I decided to try this and when i followed that procedure mine said 1 (and G2 not goldbug)
considering the G2 hasn't been out that long how many versions are there
and what is the difference between version 1 and version 3
after reading you re field test on the original G2 i,m happy with what Ive got i,m just curious why they would change the software so quick
thanks for taking you re time to read this and good luck Pete.

I used a G2 Prototype, the same as the Gold Bug Pro and it was the 3 software version.

That is correct on the physical packaging. The G2 uses the same upper rod system as the Teknetics T2 and Omega.

My 'prototype' G2 was a first release of the G2 when they were shipping the G2 and Fisher Gold Bug Pro. Mine also read Gold Bug at turn-on and that was a simple reprogramming needed in the software. A dealer friend got two G2's in that way and sent them in for the reprogramming to say G2.

I would suggest you send an e-mail to Mike Scott at First Texas Products and ask for his clarification. I only know of the 3 version being the G2 and Gold Bug Pro.

Pete, I know that it can be easy for a programmer to type in a wrong key or key code as I have seen it before, and with others brands, too. As I stated in my review I did on October 30th, the G2 certainly has its place, at least in my personal arsenal. It is a 19 kHz design, and it was aimed at supplying the gold nugget hunter with a very able detector that is also quite versatile.

It works quite well for me, especially in trashier sites with the 5" DD coil, and the stock 11" DD does okay for covering open ground. It is not a 'depth monster' as such when compared to the likes of the Omega or T2 on higher-conductive coins and other targets, but on lower-conductive coins and gold jewelry and buttons and bullets and other smaller artifacts, it is a dandy!

Enjoy your outings with it!

Monte

My G-2 when turned on says G-2 and it is version 1. Some of the first G-2s released had to be returned to be re-programmed according to some of the dealers. I purchased my G-2 November 12, 2010. There is no serial # on mine or anyone elses purchased at that time.

Montes right, the G2 basicly is the same as the Gold Bug version 3 althou it displays version 1. Guess thats like the F-75 & T2 differences. Don't know, don't care, the G2 is one heck of a machine!!!!

Thanks Monte and everybody else that took the time to reply
when i get the time to get back out (weather) i,l report back with any finds

good luck for 2011 Pete
PS. if i have done it right here,s a shot of the castle on the land where i will be trying the H2
