A Question for JamesND

Maverick

New member
James,

Been lurkin most of the summer and I have to ask you a question bud. You post a lot of uncleaned silver coins with lots of dirt on them silvers, but the dirt always is always caked on the obverse because your coins are always sitting very flat for your scans. Now my "old pappy" didn't raise no fool so I'm just asking why aren't the coins at all angles on the scan because it's impossible to just rinse just one side of them coins. Seems to me if you dig em that way the law of averages says there would be the same amount of dirt on the front as on the back. No offense, just tryin to make sure there ain't no double dealing at this game before I sit down.

Bret

Look closer at the scans. I can clearly see that they are not laying flat.

I just couldn't leave it alone, this reminds me of when I posted my video of finding my walking liberty half on you tube and some guy posted that it looked like I planted that coin. I know that I dug it up but it still irritated me. James is one of the top detectorists on this forum and Takes a great deal of time to take pictures before cleaning and after and ads great stories of the day so it feels like you were hunting with him. I enjoy his posts as i am sure everyone does, and I could only dream of reaching the amounts of gradable coins that he finds. I welcome you to the forum as he already did, but proceed with a little more caution. All of the detectorists here are great guys and we never second guess each other. so have fun and post your great finds.

I use a Hewlett Packard ScanJet 4100c Scanner for the pics. It's old school but works good enough for me. The Lid on it has a white type soft padding on it so what dirt is on the Coins, when I lay the lid down, it flattens out the Coins. Sometimes it turns the Coins since I try and get them straight up and down when they are dirty. I look at certain areas on the back like the One Dime on the Merc, Roosevelt Dime, and the Barber Dimes to know which direction they are facing. It takes a little time, especially on the Wheats to do this but I like posting everything right side up for your viewing. The Backs are then put up on the Scanner Bed with the words upside down or the reverse of the coin upside down so the scan taken is of the Coins in the normal direction for all your viewing. Thanks for that great question Maverick. No offense taken here. My finds have always been genuine and have never cheated to make any of my hunts seem more than they were. You have to remember that I hunt at least 8-10 hours on Saturday and Sunday and don't stop for breaks. I have hunted with a lot of people and they can't believe I just keep going and going like I do without a break but it's something I enjoy doing and I only can do it on the weekends due to working Construction during the week, making for some tired days after work. Hope this clears that up for you Maverick. Good Luck and HH to you this weekend if you get the chance to get out.

and meeting fellow detectorists possibly from your area. This forum helps tons of people get started on the right track and helps also in speeding up the learning process of their machines. I've always had fun helping others and have enjoyed posting my finds so others can see it can be done, going out and finding good sites and bringing home some goodies for their collections. Like I have said before, it takes me a few hours just to get my post up and running since I have to scan the items dirty, wipe the scanner off from dirt, then wash the finds, rescan them, and then upload the pics and do up the story about the hunt during this time out. There will always be these types of questions and I know this so I just hope that everyone will take my word that all my finds are always 100% genuine. Thanks for the response Montanagold. Hope you get out and find a great old spot just loaded with goodies soon. Sure would be great to see you find a spot like that. Thanks again and Good Luck and HH to you.:detecting:

Howdy guys

I too lurk on this sight, it caused me to buy a Minelab EXll about 10 months ago. I tried it out for about 5 months, but the weight and bad balance of the unit made me think I had made a mistake.

Getting back on the subject, about 2 yrs. ago, a member on here by the name of Scully called James out about him finding so many old silver coins. This poster was insinuating that James could not have found that many silver coins on land, as Scully was a lake hunter in Calif. and was not finding as many old silver coins. This guy was also telling James that if his dug silver was genuine, then why was it so clean and shiny looking. Ever since then James has shown pictures of his silver dirty, and then a picture of them cleaned up. It is hard to tell if silver is dug, unless the it was dug in unkind soil conditions, but copper or bronze targets take on a green patina that is un-mistakable. I have never for one moment doubted Jame's finds, just look at the beautiful green patina on his wheats and indian head pennys.
Here are a few thoughts about this, James knows about research, because you can't find old coins if they are not there! It takes time and hard work to find the neat stuff he is finding, also where to start hunting an old sight, a person needs to know how to read a sight. It takes a certain tallent to know where the activity of an old sight took place a 100 yrs. ago! I will wrap this up with saying this, I hope James does not come looting at my home town because there would be nothing for me to find.:)

I commend you James on your response. A very good answer without getting combative. Continue posting your finds. I alway's look forward to seeing them.
Good luck Gary

I remember Skully from another forum. He is one of the best freshwater hunters there is. People questioned him about what he found sometimes, but there were never any holes in his story. I didn't know he called James out, but Skully really knew his stuff. Now my old pappy taught me never to draw on an inside straight, but I have to agree with Skully that James seems to draw a royal flush week after week. The law of averages says that just ain't possible and if I were sitting down at that table, I'd walk. No offense to James, my statement isn't personal, if he were in town I'd buy him dinner as he seems like a really nice guy, but when it comes to detecting and poker, let's just say I don't believe in coincidences, especially twenty weeks in a row. I don't care how much research you do or how far you drive, you're gonna get skunked a few times as far as silver goes (as Skulley did) as we all know that there's an element off luck in detecting, just like in poker, no one wins every hand. Don't hate me for my opinion, I've noticed a number of other "holes" too, but let's just leave it at that for the time being.

Wow!! Ill just zip My lip. I could go so many ways with this. I guess id better fold.

Its too bad that MD'ing is like everything else: there's only one way to go from the top. It's too bad there are always people who enjoy taking others down for whatever reason. Even if James never posted a single silver coin, the rest of his finds are impressive enough on their own. This kind of stuff may be the reason I know a few great hunters that prefer to stay away from these places, they don't need the hassle and they could really care less who believes what or who they impress. Keep up the great work James. Maverick, the poker references were a bit lame. JJ

I just wish those that doubt it would get a chance to hunt with James and see for yourself what he can find and learn how he does it. Both James and his hunting Buddie Tim find some great items, but they do spend a lot of time in one day detecting when they do get out.

Maverick

I only got one thing to say: This ain't the World Series of Poker and you ain't Mel Gibson!

for some of the greatest hunters out there not to think about posting their finds here on the forum or any other forum at that. Some of us are blessed with good sites while others just need some good info and need to go out a little further away from home to increase their chances of making great finds like ones I post. There will always be a few people that doubt finds and I know this but as many times I have stated that my finds are always the real deal, they just choose not to believe. Just remember you doubter's out there.....the more time you waste reflecting negative comments and thinking this way.....the more time other hunters in your area have to clean out potential sites that you could have been hitting but you didn't ask for any kind of help or how to go about finding these spots. Even though I might be a long ways from many of you, that doesn't mean I can't give you some good info and get you started in the right direction. That's the main reason for me being here....to help others become more successful in their hunts and to bring home a little more treasure each time out. Anytime anyone feels like it, PM me and start asking how to find these spots and I will gladly help you out with whatever other questions you may have. Thanks for all the support and Good Luck and HH to you all.:detecting:

That's the only way your going to succeed in getting as much stuff as we do. It's either that or you get lucky and find a hot spot just loaded with goodies so you don't have to drive around a lot looking for good sites to detect. Thanks Rick for your response. Good Luck and HH to you. P.S. Wait until you hear what I got yesterday! Got a GOODIE!!!:detecting:

and for one thing, he is searching for Jewelry at lakes, not Coins which is a bit harder to find at these spots due to the water issue. Here is a list of things I hunt and if you think this isn't possible for going out and finding things like I and many others do, well you have no idea on the potential of some of the sites that still exist. I hit Churches, School Houses (country and town), Fairgrounds, Ball Diamonds, Football Fields, Parks, Rodeo Grounds, Picnic Grounds, Vacant Lots and so much more. Now if you go out 200-300 miles in one direction, you would see that there is going to be hundreds of sites to hit. Maybe you haven't been reading my postings like you should but there has been many spots that have skunked me and Tim this year on our travels and we would be jumping around a lot just to find a spot that had a few Wheats in them. Once we find Older Coins, we will try it for awhile and if it doesn't pan out, then we are on the road again to the next town or site. Apparently just over 15,000 miles since May, 8, 2009 just isn't proof enough for some in realizing that just maybe if we put that kind of mileage on that we would be bringing home some goodies. Some days, we hit up to 15-20 sites, just depending how good they are. I very much doubt that Skully or you have even come close to doing this in your travels so I wouldn't even comment on such things as my finds because you have no idea on the sites or area I'm hitting and how little or how hard some of this area has been hit with detectors. Just remember.....there is a lot of land area in the United States and there is no way that someone has a detector going over every inch of it. Sure.....there are people that may have a detector but it ain't no Minelab and they sure aren't going out and hunting like some of us since most of these detectors end up in the closet due to lack of interest with poor finds the few times out that they used them. I have a lot of respect for Skully and I hope he reads this since I never doubted his finds when he was posting them. When it comes to land hunting though, it's a total different ball game when searching for Silver Coins and you have to have the older sites and good sites to keep landing them Silver. There are a lot more hunters on land than water which is also possibly a reason if Skully wasn't finding Silver Coins. They are going to be hit more than the water areas. Hope this clears some of this up. Can't help it if I have good sites and a lot of time on my hands on the weekends. Good Luck and HH to you.

Thanks for that response Hombre. The Silver Coins are always tough also to keep the dirt on them while out hunting. Even though some doubt my finds....I do not care....for one I know the sites I'm hitting are real and that I will be needing a larger safe soon because of the rate of my collection growing. Thanks for your great response Hombre! I'm forever in your debt! Good Luck and HH to you.:detecting:

If I remember my movies correctly the one who unjustly accuses another poker player of cheating usually ends up losing a gun fight. Jim
