A question for firefighter 254 and anyone else

Yesterday, I was out doing a little scouting, sweeping in a few sites. I was running my gain at 25. This one spot I wasn't seeing anything in auto so switched to 27 manual and got a few signals, like whisper high tones, with depth gauge showing 10 inches. I was in a hurry and didn't up the gain to 30. My question is: Is this what I should be hearing on say on a 10" dime with gain at 25? This morning when I was hunting I had my gain on 30 and everything was loud and clear. That's actually the way I normally run, same with etrac.

From my experience with deep coin signals say 9-10 inch's deep the signal is clear with an occasional grunt indicating trash mixed in i run auto +3 with my gain at 26 using combined with ferrous coin with little to no discrimination. You said you switched to manual 27 and got some whispering high tones where they consistent 2 way signals tuning 90% to verify if there consistent i would dig them it also depends on your soil type if you up'ed the gain to 30 and got better results i would stick with running a higher gain as long as the machine runs stable hope this helped HH .....Dave

I myself am running the gain up to 30 and auto +3.
Huge difference in finding those deeper targets.
With running gain that high, deep targets just jump
Out of the hole. I know some guys want to hear the
whisper of a deeper target, I want to hear it loud and clear.

That question has to many variables to answer correctly. What size is the target? How moist is the ground? EMI in the area? What is target made of? Low conductor? High conductor??? Etc.. etc... etc...

Looking at your silver king post I think you got that pretty well figured out.I always run gain as high as I can go.

Deep on adds filters and it just helps to smooth out the target Id's at depth from being so jumpy is all.

Gain makes the deep targets louder easier to hear so as not to miss them.

I run in 50 CO with my gain at 23 and on 8" - 9" coins the are softer but in no way too soft that you would walk past them. I dug a 10" and 11" pull tab and it was the same. The only way I could see missing a target with gain at 23 is if you weren't paying attention in a trashy area. I dug a nail at around 12" that was falsing and that was the one and only target that hit so softly that it could have been missed. I decided then not to go any lower than 23, just to be safe. I don't want a "whisper" on deeper targets, but when there are a lot of targets in the ground like where I hunt, listening for that subtly softer and deeper target and then doing a quick verification by glancing at the depth meter is what I prefer to do. Also, it is exciting to listen for those slighter "warbles" in 50 CO. Combine at the same gain of 23 seems to hit noticeably harder/louder it seems - but perhaps it's just the pitch.

Regarding deep on, I read someone here who tested it and what they found was that it really only served a function WHEN your gain was turned way down AND the target was deep. I have yet to test that though.
