Well fellows I am getting back in the groove have almost forgot all I learned about the explorer from the winter. Here is my question the other night I scanned in all my clad and silver leaving the the typical blocked out upper right and of course the square for the nickel well here is the question when typical detecting you get the bouncing of the x on the screen so it bounces where you don't have accept cleared do you guys think this makes a different sound compared to the scan in object if you follow me....what do you guys think on this one. You can see what I am talking about at this site it is the last pic at the bottom of the page what is really got me wondering if where the crosshair moves should be in the except range too...

Yes you can miss them easy with a tight disc pattern.. thats why I almost always use iron mask alone

Jim would you go into a bit more detail about what you mean "use iron mask alone" and what is "iron mask alone" used primarily for. thanks Ken (I found a 1906 barber dime today and two more tokens, but am still having a difficult time understanding the meaning of where the crosshairs are and what they mean as they move around, AND how to determine what the sounds mean). Thanks again for your help. Ken

you are either in iron mask or a discriminting format,Whenever you click ironmask on it is a stand alone mode regardless of other programs. The smaller (ie weaker) the iron target is the further to the left it will plot on your screen ,example at - 9 you will not see or here nails or pieces of them an their associated corrosion,And if you do they will plot high left along the edge of ironmask. The rest of your targets generally speaking, unless you have multiple targets under the coil should register in accord with relation to iron left to right, and conductivity vertically...other folks know far more,,search the archives on this site for more detailed info, several people have screens /target plots/ disc programs that are examples of their efforts.. (in conductive the higher the plot the higher the sound pitch,if you switch to sounds/ferrous,,the further rt the higher the pitch)...cs

Thanks Charlie, I really appreciate you helping me with understanding some of the settings. The book shows some things and how to set stuff, but not really how to understand and interpret different crosshairs and sounds and combinations. The only real way to learn is out in the field, I understand that, but one really needs to go out with someone who has a lot of experience, unfortunately I don't have the benefit of someone to help so I am really depending on this forum as i go out and bring back some of the problems I run into. the people are really helpful and trying to answer my questions. I know they are basic and most people who have detected before move up to the minelab with little problem but the XS is my first coin machine and it is quite a learning experience, especially without having anyhelp at all. thanks again for everyones help, Ken

Ken ,,the forum has helped me immensely, and still does ,,note my query of jim above.Dont feel that cause its your first machine you are at a disadvantage...mainly cause to start learning the xs the first lesson says forget any thing you know about a detector,,quite a mouthfull...grabbed the wife's cz 5 the other day causa little coil and felt like instant dummyy..Iron sounds like xs foil..have fun happy huntin ,,to me pinpointing and screwcaps are the big obstacles..I like audio 1... <IMG SRC="/forums/images/csflag.gif" BORDER=0 ALT="::"> cs
