A question about the MXT

This may sound like a silly question but when you get a reading in the - zone like Iron, while your in C/J mode how often do you
check/dig it just to see what it is? What do you usually find when you dig signals that sounds of iron, besides nails that is? Just curious.

IN Ohio not to many civil war relics.I do dig those once in a while old pocket knife old farm tool pieces of tractor or some mechanical part hot rocks, melted i don't know what. But in other state were they hunt relics i don't think they pass them up.Let see if some people in southern states answer.More civil war relics.

I would dig it because you never really know. Allot of good antique Items are iron, most every thing was made of iron back in the old days. But I dig every thing anyway.

I'm like Ohio Fred. I don't dig much at all with a negative VDI. When I have, it's always a piece of old iron, etc. JUNK in other words. So, I say to myself, "TRUST YOUR MACHINE". I think I've said that many times over. And that statement is usually right! Good luck and HH to all, Nancy

I'm in Alabama and hunt Tennessee as well. To answer your question, it depends on depth and location. If if I'm in a field and it registers as iron that's 6 inches or deeper I usually dig it because the numbers on deep targets in our ground can shift into the iron range and most Civil War artifacts show up at about 7 or 8 inches. If I'm in the woods I dig everything at first to determine if there's a layer of modern trash. Once I've determined at what level the modern trash is I start cherry picking, looking for relics. Once I start finding a few relics (field or woods) I go back to digging everything. With so few potential virgin sites left its important for the modern relic hunter to use a methodical approach.
