A question about the iron mask.

Mick in Dubbo

New member
With the GT, if you turned the iron mask off, would this stop the detector from nulling out on iron?
Thanks.
Mick Evans.

No. It will still null.
The purpose of iron mask is to help you find things close to iron. Iron mask on the GT will also cause it to hit on iron and hot rocks worse than other sovs.

Art is correct that it will hit coins close to iron with it on, but with it off it will probably null even more than before too. All the Sovereigns other then the original and the GT have iron mask on all the time and being the GT is more sensitive than any of the other Sovereigns you will notice it will false a little more on some iron with the Iron Mask on. For most that know the Sovereign it is not much of a problem once you know this as we learn ways to tell the difference with the way the signal responds compared to a good signal.

I'm a little confused.
If it will still null on iron, then how does it hear a target next to it with the iron mask?
Also, given that it has the Accu-Trak of the Eureka Gold, then wouldn't it handle hot rocks and iron better than other Sovereigns rather than do worse if the iron mask was turned off?
Do larger coins cause the Sovereigns to reset enough when they are nulled, to hear them?
I'm impressed by the sovereigns tone system, but concerned about it's nulling. I guess you probably figured out my concerns though.

I think the iron mask subtracts part of the iron signal to make it look weaker so a good target is easier to detect. That is just a guess.

Accutrac is an all metal function only and has nothing to do with discriminate mode iron mask off/on. The GT is worse about hot rocks and iron that sounds off with discriminate iron mask ON.

A non-ferrous object that has a strong enough response will come through when in an iron null, or a null from any other discriminated object.

I will also add that a good target next to iron will sound off if you are swinging the coil slower so the Sovereign can see all targets. If going fast over a null of iron it will not have the time to see the good target beside it. This is why we keep saying go slower when there is a lot of nulling, the threshold should be coming and going while swinging the coil.

Thanks Art and Rick.
You have answered a question that has bugged me about the Sovereigns. I was out showing a new chum about how to use a metal detector yesterday, when one of my hunting buddies showed up with his trusty old Sovereign. It had the 8in Coin search coil on it. We stopped detecting for a bit and watched him in action. Those audio reponses were first rate. It would take a bit of time to figure out though. Having only owned a sovereign for a few weeks as my second detector 3yrs back ( I was only really just getting into the hobby then), I think That I could use one (armed with a meter) as my primary top end machine now. Just have to save a few more pennies and trade in my GTI.
