A question about smaller coils for the ETRAC...

Craig Bergh

New member
I have an Etrac and an Excalibur. Both are fine machines.

I would like to get a smaller coil for the ETRAC to sift through the junk at many sites. Some days, the machine nulls out constantly as it locks on to deep iron. I think a small coil is what I need. I am looking at the Sunray 5 inch coil, verses the 5 X 8 SEF Coil.

My question is: Do the ID Numbers remain the same with smaller coils on this machine. I see some threads that say the ETRAC numbers are the same, other threads seem to say the numbers are different with a smaller coil.
Anyone had a chance to try either of these two coils?

Thank you,

Craig

I have the 8x6 SEF and a NEL Sharpshooter and the TID numbers ARE THE SAME as the stock coil. The only thing I have seen that will change numbers is soil conditions, depth of target, position of the target in the ground and if there is other targets nearby. The simple answer is no, a smaller coil will give you true numbers.

I use the small SEF and love it. The numbers are the same as the stock coil, or at least very close. I don't see much depth difference either, between the SEF and stock.

I have both and the tid readings are the same. However, the Sun Ray X5 is a small coil and great in heavy trash and the 6x8 SEF is really a mid- size and also serves well in this kind of conditions. Both are excellent coils !

I have the 6x8, 5" Sunray and 6" Excellerator. All ID the same and work well for their intended purpose. You do lose some depth with the smaller coils, but not as much as you might think.

Like Tenspeed, I also have the 6" Excellerator. For me, the TID values have been consistent with the bigger coil. The loss of depth has been minimal and the coil has a paid for itself with it's ability to sort through high trash. Personally, I opted for a closed coil because I hunt areas with a lot of vegetation stubble and have found the butterflies can get hung up in it.

I also use the 6" excellerator and enjoy the smooth surfce and it's ability to sniff thru the trash, glide thru weeds, and grab a 7-8" dime....

Had the 6" Excellerator sold it and bought 4.5" X 7" Excel. like it and feel it is one of the better small coils. Numbers stay the same.

Great coil! On my Etrac 95% of the time!

If you have coin garden then you will know! If you don't have coin garden then make one! I have coin garden for 2 years now! Several coins at various deep between 5 and 9 inch deep. Its good test to make sure that my machine is great before I go out to hunt to search for old coins!
