A question about headphones?!

New member
Hello All,

Hope the weather isn't to bad where anyone else is at.
Here is my question. I have been detecting on and off for years, I use headphones to block out other noises in the background. I have used good ones and not so good ones. I am now going to ear bud type earphones instead of headphones for comfort, cost and weight. What would be the advantage of headphones over era plug type headphones? I always hear about the "faint signals" but nothing will be heard at anything below what you have the threshold set at. Is this true or am I wrong? I don't mind any type of constructive criticism that you may have. Has anyone else tried earplug headphone?
I just feel that if you hear the threshold anything above that will be heard no matter how faint the signal may be. I received some junky headphones with my recent detector purchased and have experimented with some basic earplug types. I can turn the threshold down much lower with the earplugs rather than with the headphones. Realizing some of the quality headphones have limiter switches for loud signals, I do see the advantage to that. But if I can turn the volume down on the detector I don't see what difference that would make. Any help or suggestions would greatly be appreciated.

Thanks,

JFK (not the famous one)

[size=medium]Hay JFK,

My detectors don't have a threshold tone in the discrimination mode.

Small fluctuations, even in tha all metal with a threshold are hard to hear
with out good headphones.

I've heard that some digital metal detectors don't have very expressive
audio. If that's so, then tha quality may be wasted.

I use analog detectors. I can use stereo headphones, but they suck.

Thanks for the response Tabdog. I use a Minelab detector that I have been very pleased with. It was my first update since my Garrett ADS 7 that's 19 years old now. I'm not really sure what you mean by analog verses digital. I use an XT70, you can have tone change (up to 99) and the volume increases over various targets. I would just like to know if it's worth the hundreds bucks or so to get the good head phones or not. As I said, the ear buds are light, cheap, comfortable and cool in the summer. But if I'm missing something I sure would like to know.

Thanks,

JFK

Hey JFK on my X-Terra 70 I like running the full ear coverage headphones. I have a set of Sun Ray Pro Golds, and a set of the new RAT Max headphones. Having never used the ear but type I really can not comment on those. I have a hearing loss and like the extra I pick up with the phones. If you want the next time we do a hunt I will bring both sets and let you try them. Good luck with your choice.

I hope you are still getting in some hunts. I am still hunting and finding a few goodies, Beale.

those ear buds your asking about, are they the ones that are custom made to your ear??
i use this type as a fit for my bluetooth adaptor on my phone, it made a difference there
i wondered if they would work good in this application, but the cost is great compared to
a different set of headphones..:detecting:

just my oppinion,as far as comfort goes i personally would stick with the full cup head set,i can easily detect all day
with these, the earbuds always pull out on me and kill my ear holes after only a short spell
the ear buds really don't do that good of a job keeping out outside noise either, just my oppinion!

The ear buds I have are not the high dollar ones but, they are the "noise cancelling" type. Guess I'll just have to save up the dough for a set of Rat Phones like Beale has. I'll use the ear buds the next time I go out and telling anyone that's interested as to how well\or not they worked.

Good luck ALL and thanks for the time to respond!

JFK

That's an idea.

I've thought about getting a pair of "noise canceling" earphones so I can listen to tv while the wife is asleep. But, with a 1/4 to 1/8 stereo adaptor, I could also use it with the Ace. Wonder if they would cut out too much sound? Always good to know somewhat about what's going on around you safety wise.
Whatdoyathink? Anyone tried dem? BTY, I also use full covering earphones.

If you do any bsuh hunting, the earbuds are the way to go as with the full coverage phone they are contiuously pulled off my head by branches. They are also great on hot days as you eliminate the sweating. The pair I use I got from radio shack and they have a volume control on them as I have a 250 which doesn't have a volume control. I think they are great. HH KRT.

Hay JFK,

You said:

You know, I'm not sure either.

When I used machines with TID's tha sounds seemed to be tied
into tha circutry for tha display which is digetal.

I did not use headphones back then.

But tha response was flat compared to my machines now.

Now that I use headphones, I can not do without them.

Some people tell me that some of tha digetal machines
do not have an expressive response, and good headphones
don't help that much.

So, I tend to believe it from my experience.

If that don't make sense, sorry, that's tha best I can do.

HH,

Tabdog

I use cheap ear buds paid $1.00 No kidding and they came with the 1/4 to 1/8 adapter. The best thing is when I broke the first set when it snagged I did not feel bad about it at all. The ACE lacks a volume control so I let the ear buds hang lose or just over the ears near the ear opening. They are not too warm for a hot day and they worked great under insulated ear muffs, knit cap combination on the really cold days. I can hear what is going around me so it is not like I'm in the cone of silence. If I can find a way to make a volume adjustment device I will be set. :garrett:

Detectin,

I purchased mine on e-bay. Got 2 sets for less than 5 bucks and that included shipping. I didn't feel I could go wrong at that price to give it a try. As I said I will be more than glad to tell anyone hoe they work when I get them.

Thanks for the input ALL,

JFK (still not the famous one)

The end of the week here it's going to be in the 50s, not sure if the Harley or the Minelab is gonna win my time! Maybe I'll "two-time" and do both.

Sun Ray Pro Golds and RATs -

Tab,

That's pretty much what I've heard. Just not enough dough at this time. Had to find something for now. Yes, I'll replace with something quality but, I'm still just a poor Paramedic. (feel sorry for me yet?)

Thank's

JFK

ha ha i know i got that from one of my kids songs
it goes "here's a little something for your ear holes"
i forget who it is but they listen to some pretty rough stuff,ha ha ha
