A problem - and Suggestions

Hi Guys....

I have been using the ATX with the smaller coil (8 inch mono) a lot - however, as the beach seems to be getting 'cleaner' decided to switch back the standard DD coil. My hunt last week was a total flop, and I just got annoyed with the machine which is unusual, as it has served me very well! I was chasing targets, that did not exist!

Back in the water yesterday for 5 minutes, before giving up! False signals and the machine would just not run smoothly..... Tried FREQ scan, dropping sensitivity to 5 or less.....terrible....

After going home, removed the coil cover and discovered the BLACK EPOXY type material has, in approx 20% of its contact, separated from the green plastic by 1-2mm. Allowing salt water to enter the coil!

I guess I can let it dry out? then re seal? or just pop an email to Garrett with the photos.

For such an expensive machine, I wonder if this was just faulty prep on this one coil.

Any suggestions ???

thats the plan - but it seems a simple fix (reseal) - so was wondering if anyone had similar experience..... I imagine a small amount of water entered the coil so unlikely to have rusted etc (but I guess you never know)

I personally would not try to fix it myself. Salt water in there could be pretty ugly.

I imagine talking with Garrett...they will give you same advice.

If you were in salt water, the damage is DONE! I have successfully repaired a WOT coil, but for the cost and it will only get worse, contact Garrett. A factory defect in my mind. I speak with many years of micro-miniature NASA repair work behind me. It is not just a simple put some epoxy patch over the open area. It would be very difficult for you to get any moisture out of the coil before you would apply the epoxy. If the coil was out of warranty and you had nothing to loose, I would give you a few more hints of how to proceed but it would still be in warranty...contact Garrett.
