A picnic and some relic hunting

Had an opportunity to hunt a property that is known to go back, with a house on it, at least 200 years. Wife packed a picnic lunch, kids planned to fish ... but the breeze coming directly off the water was a bit much for them so they did a long picnic and chatted.

After a while our 16 year old daughter asks if she can hunt too. Why SURE!! There's a first time for everything! She got a five minute lesson with the Compadre and went off in the opposite direction from where I had been hunting with the Tejon. "Stay to your side this is my side" she says.

She is digging away and finding some interesting iron. Then she comes up with part of a silver spoon. Had fun but doesn't like the digging so much. Wants to hunt and have someone else dig, same way she likes to fish and have someone else clean the fish. Maybe beach time with a scoop! But she was beaming with what she found.

I got an old lock, some more interesting iron. Some shells; shot gun and rifle. Couple of old lantern pieces. Got a 1913 wheat penny at about 9 to10 inches ... faint but repeatable. A 1941 wheat. A 1918 mercury dime that knocked my ears off, was only an inch down. And a I think an old rifleman button at about 8 inches. Back of the button has clear imprint of words orange gilt colour.

The button was almost the find of the day ... but the real find was the interest by the 16 year old who frequently has said "what a goober" and hopes the neighbors aren't looking when I go out with the detector.

One of her iron pieces has a heart shaped insert that appears to be cast metal with writing that we can't quite make out. The piece has a rod coming down the center and extending ... maybe a weather vane? Don't know what it is really, but the heart shape in the center caught her eye as soon as it came out of the ground.

Nice day out!

In mild ground the Tejon requires a good digger. Mine is easy to gauge depth. It is 12 inches long over all. Blade is 6 inches, handle is six inches. Blade plus half the handle to target depth is 9 inches.

If I get a chance to go back to this site, I am going to spend time with the 5.75 inch coil on rather than the standard coil. There was a lot of iron and several places where I couldn't separate targets using the 9 x 8. So I moved on. There is a lot more area to cover and much of what we did cover will need to do again.

Hope things are going well for you Gunar. Good to hear from you!
