A noob to water hunting

I'm a rookie at water hunting. I have questions about relic hunting in small creeks. What's the best digging tools to remove over burden? It seems that things wash into pockets all most like behind a little dam. If I find stuff that's shallow could there be more under it deeper in that area? Recovery in a pain in the neck. Could some of you old water hunters help me out. Thanks TIM

I tried detecting in a river last weekend and gave up... too many rocks and trash.
I was using a PI machine which made things worse.
My long handle scoop was useless.. you may have better results with a shovel.
For me it seemed like too much work and with the current, if I got it up, it would probably drift away downstream.
Civil war relics might make it worth the effort to try.. I'm sure there are many out there doing that.
Good luck,
Felix

A metal detector would be absolutely useless in this river. I find pockets of gravel on the clay and fan my hand to see if any goodies are in it. I find old coins and lots of sinkers and other junk. Can't help you with your dilemma

My advice. Pass on the river. Go to the beach or lake. Start getting used to what a penny, dime, nickle, quarter sound like. I assume your using a cz 21. The 1280 had a funny way of telling you what it was you were digging. Blips, pass. Don't digg them...unless of course its your only signal.

On average...100 to 500 targets of junk/clad per gold item. It will vary depending on use, cliental, and if others are hunting. Welcome to water hunting.

fyi...as you probably know. loose lips sink ships...and your chances of a find. Even to coworkers and seemingly friendly strangers. When I hunt I listen to everything. The chatter behind my back. Sometimes...some one will tip you off to a drop.

GL and HH. Give it time. You must have a good scoop. You must have a wetsuit. I was in warm 78 degree water the other day for 5 hours [skunked too]...had to put suit on after 20 minutes. Its a must.

Protect your feet. Get good booties that are made for walking on coral.
