A nice first cut hammered and 2 roman, all in one day

These are my best finds from the last time I went out properly with my T2 version 6. I have had the T2 for about 4 months now and think its the bees knees.
These I found in the east of the UK when I attended a rally at the end of September. The hammered which is my first hammered ever since I started 18 months ago is a silver Henry III Longcross London cut penny 1248-1250. The larger Roman is Claudius II, Mint of Rome, 268-270 AD and the smaller is Helena 325-340 AD, both Roman have this lovely green / blue colour and for the age are in wonderful condition.
Conditions were damp / rain on grass pasture, settings were discrim 5, sens 75 and tone 2+.

Regards
Paul

Great finds Paul, I love those longcross pennies. We find them sometimes here in Holland as well.

Wow, great finds!

How did you clean the silver or is that natural? (I find some silver and generally just soak it in soapy water but that doesn't work that great.)

Hi
It was pretty clean when I dug it up but I used tin foil the same used to wrap your sandwiches in. A little spit in to the foil, fold the foil over the coin and rub inbetween your fingers which generates some heat and reacts with the spit and cleans the coin. If silver you will get a bad egg smell and some black will be on the foil. Does not harm the silver coin but removes some of the grime. Good to use in the field, so just keep some foil in the car ready for a quick rub with a coffee break.

This watch fob I found a while ago was cleaned the same way. It came out the ground black and I thought at first it was just a badge, but gave a quick rub on site and saw the hallmark and this how I cleaned the rest, no chemicals at all.
Cheers
Paul

Great suggestion, thanks!

I just dug a really nice old hammered and it was green. But the VDI told me it was not silver. So, I just soaked it in soapy water. That beautiful smooth green patina is gone! Too bad, just from water, think there was some iron in it. A 500+ year old coin about 1.5" deep. I will be really careful from now on and try your suggestion on silver. I use vinegar when the coin is not as valuable to me and that works really well.

For silver i use CITRIC ACID. One can buy that in powder form. Works very good but you have to watch the process a little. Some old coins are copper but silver plated. As a starter years ago, I ruined some very nice coins with the wrong cleaning methods. The citric [lemon] acid I only use for solid silver coins.

I you want I could send you some in an envelope.

HH, Eric

Particularly in this day and age, don't ever send ANY white powder in an envelope through the mail! That is unless you'd enjoy a surprise visit from the local Feds.

Hehehe I am in Holland and that would have to be send to Germany, don't worry!:bouncy: But they will link Holland with other white powder I guess...:heh:

Thanks for the offer Eric, but I have some! I guess it's used for cleaning calcium or the like.

Well, I tried it and I cleaned up some recently found silver coins pretty well. When I'm finished I'll post them, got some really old ones. Unfortunately, I found out one of them were silver coated - oops, but there is a little bit left. Guess it will take some experience.

Hope we get to hunt together. If I'm up in your area I'll pm you before hand. If you are ever down here I can take you to my "secret spot"...
