A nice buckle, Civil War and Boer War relics...

Rained most of the day and shortly before I got off work it stopped. I went to an area where I thought I had permission for a grass field to detect but I was wrong, only plowed fields and planted wheat fields so I detected a plowed field that still had some wheat stubble as I was burning daylight. Found two plain buttons, an air inflation needle for balls and this nice buckle dating from 1500-1650, found the same in my buckle book.

The following are pictures of one prize I won on a forum, all of it and a few relics I did not include. They came with two nice display cases. The most awesome prize I have won on a forum contest, it is great to touch history! The first picture are relics from the Boer (Farmer) War fought in South Africa from 1899-1902. A cannon friction primer, 4 British coat buttons, two canvas buttons, a cannon primer, two different lead canister shot, 4 bullet casings from a British 303 and Boer Martini Henri and another type o Boer casing.

Several examples and calibers of CW bullets, one bullet was converted into a musket nipple protector.

A partial Infantry Eagle Breast Plate, the left plate is a replica. This will make a nice display.

That's cool! Relics from 3 continents in the same post! Does this forum offer variety or what!?!?! Congratulations on winning the contest! Does John live out WEST here in the U.S.? Great post!

yes, John does live out West, the Frontier West. You may know of him or maybe even have met him. He has done some diggin in Virginia where some of these relics I posted came from. HH, Mike

I met him at the DIV hunt about year ago and I remember seeing his post from his trip to S. Africa on the ARH forum. I figured it had to be him. I should be a detective!

there is probably more experience at those DIV digs than an Archie could imagine. It has been proven when Archies and detectors work together the outcome is great and data collection increases. HH, Mike

I have been catching some grief over the last couple years from a local "wannabe" archie. There is a 1750 French & Indian War site not far from where I work. A friend of mine owns the land adjacent to the land the state owns. I've been detecting there for years. I got a "message" from the "head archie" in Raleigh to "stop digging!" and to give them what I had found. The "pros" are doing their own dig on the state owned land now, but I think I have more relics in my collection than they do! There is a BIG stink in town over this whole thing. They want to rebuild the fort and make it a tourist attraction, and use it as a school for "archies". The problem is...they want to city to pay for it. The folks in town don't seem to interested, but the local archie isn't taking "No" for an answer. After a VERY HEATED city council meeting, and a mention of me (not by name) in the news paper, I decided to lay low for a while. What that really means, is I'm just waiting for the ground to thaw!

You might consider helping out but it sounds like the Archie wants to make a name and money. I would give my finds for a good cause and would love to help out on a Scientific/Archaeological dig but here in the oldest part of Germany, my new permit, the Archies say war relics have no Scientific value and they are not interested as the relics are well documented, same in the USA. That is true. I could respect an Archie asking for your help but to try and make you look bad is another story, this person is trying to feed from your finds. I would have to hunt that Archie down like a gold coin and do a one on one. HH, Mike

This sister is trying to make a name for herself alright. There is much debate as to where the fort truly was. Back in the early 70's they decided the fort sat on this particular site because there was an open well on the site. (There were wells all over that countryside!) The archies did a dig there back in the 70's and they didn't find "diddly". This lady has them out there diggin the same spot again 35 years later. What do they expect to find? She is using my finds as "bait" to try to get the tax payers to buy my friend's land because that's where the relics are. I think the fort was on my friends land. If they get the tax payers to buy the land, then they have a place to dig for the next 50 years. She wants to get UNC and NC State to partner with them in an archie school. Now she is set for the rest of her career. Is it just me, or does anyone else see an agenda here?

There was another guy back in the 70's that owned the land on the opposite side of the road from "The fort". The state decided that they didn't want someone to put up a gas station or convenience store across from "The fort" So they offered to buy his land. He told them no that he intended to farm the land. So the state condemned his property and TOOK the land! Now the state is leasing the land to someone who is farming it and making money off the land. That guy is STILL hacked off about it! That just shows the kind of people and thinking we are dealing with. I don't trust these people any farther than I can throw them!

founteerWuss included some real Civil War relics he dug from Virginia-- not the 1870 crap he trys to pass off as Civil war.

That ol boy brags about finding 350 eagle buttons a year--
just casually leaves out that its all post war stuff from the mid west that never saw any real war action   :drinking:

On the bright side that was a cool prize!!!!!!!!!
AJ.
