A metal detecting newbie's first Morgan

Just purchased the CTX 3030 less than a month ago, and are really enjoying learning this amazing instrument! Two weeks ago I went out to a remote spot in Marin County, to visit the remains of an old hunting camp that dates back to the 1850s. It was the day after a week long series of rain storms dumped almost 10 inches of rain on the area. I did a fairly quick survey of the grounds, and got a couple of clads. Then I noticed an almost 90 turn in the briskly running creek adjacent to the camp, and just on a hunch, decided to hit the inner bank of the creek turn with the 6" coil. No less than a couple of minutes later, I got a very strong 12:47 - 13:47 at 7", and knelt down to dig into the sandy gravel bank. I was using the Minelab probe to scan the handfuls of gravel I pulled out, and got big bingo in one handful. In my hand was the beautiful Morgan below. I did not need to clean this coin, as this was the exact condition it was in when I pulled it out. I hunted up stream and downstream from I snagged the Morgan, but it started to rain and grow dark, so I had to leave. I have a very strong suspicion that this Morgan was washed down the hillside from the big rains of the previous days. I'm waiting for the current series of storms to end, when I'll be going back up there to do a thorough survey of the the slopes adjacent to the creek, as I'm convinced there is a coin hoard hiding somewhere in that area. Metal detecting sure is fun! ;-)

Great find, but I do have to say.... Why is the date backwards? The background reminds me of a restaurant I visited in NJ.

Not only backwards but upside down too. Probably worthless but nice guy that I am - I'll give ya 3 bucks for it.

lady liberty faces to the left on a morgan dollar not to the right. weird maybe he took the pic in a mirror or something.

Yeah, that coin sure looks like it's in great condition for being buried 7" down in a creek bed. I've yet to dig a silver coin that was already clean when I pulled it out and didn't have any tarnish on it anywhere. Seems a little strange to me, especially how the picture was taken. Just say'in.

The pics were taken with the Apple MacBook app, Photo Booth. I didn't flip the pics. I just took a couple of more pics, and flipped them -- see below. BTW, I was with two buddies of mine, and one of them found two Morgans, along with an 1849 dime and an 1849 half-dime! My other buddy found an 1879 Morgan. All the coins were in pristine condition. the really cool thing is that my two buddies found their coins WITHOUT METAL DETECTORS! They simply dug in the gravel along the inside bank of the creek with garden trowells! That's why I believe these coins were washed down the hillside from an old cache. I'll be going back there on Friday, when all these latest storms will be over and the sun will be out in full force. I'm also prepared to spend the night there and hunt all night, IF I find more coins.

wow I am going to find a creek, dig down the side of it with a garden trowel and see how I do. I am with surfman on this...
