A little X-70 PinPointing Tip

The X-70 is the only member of the X-line that can visually ID a target while in PinPoint mode. While the PinPoint Audio and closing semi-circle Tuning Bars are non-motion based, it has been my experience that the ID function is not. The ID function appears to be motion based, and this would make sense as this is a motion discriminating machine.

So if you find yourself not getting a good ID while pinpointing, then give the coil a bit more than a wiggle, AFTER you have centered over the target.

1. Center over target in the non-motion pinpoint procedure.
2. Make small swings(large wiggles) while watching the ID number.

**Note: If you stray off-center while ID'ing, the ID will not be accurate to the point that you might even get (-)negative numbers depending on soil and target composition.

Thanks, Bill, for the pinpointing tip. I've wondered why erratic numbers would show instead of what the TID read initially. Your explanation clears that up.

as I had addressed that issue.

Even if you're in a motion discriminate (Pattern or Pattern-shifted All Metal) mode, you need to sweep the coil completely across a target the full width of the coil (plus a tiny bit) to get the best Target ID 'read' on the object. The X-Terra's do not 'accumulate' or 'average' multiple sweeps across a target like a White's DFX or XLT, but instead produce a fresh TID with each sweep, just like the MXT and Matrix M6 .. to use some comparisons.

If a coil is 'wiggled' you might or [/i]might not[/i] get a reliable Target ID and, more than not, multiple short sweeps often produce a slightly different TID with the X-Terra 70 in Pinpoint, and all three X-Terra's in the motion mode.

If Minelab ever gets a decent smaller coil out for them it will sure make a lot of people happy because both pinpointing and isolating some targets (with motion) should be easier, more accurate and produce less jumping ID numbers.
