A little surprised by the MXT

I took the MXT to the old church today where my friend has some coins buried. The coins are a 6 inch deep Indian Head Penny, 10 inch silver dime, and 12 inch Quarter. I received the 10X12 inch SEF on Tuesday and I had it on the MXT for the test. I was running the Gain at preset mark and in the Coin and Jewelry program. The MXT was running really smoothly and nailed all three coins and even ID'ed them correctly. I jacked the gain up to plus 2 and the MXT was on the edge of stability but the 10 inch dime was much louder and hit really hard. I put the 10X12 on the DFX and even though the DFX would hit the coins, the DFX had to be really hot and was not as stable as the MXT. I was running the DFX on the 15Khz modified Coin and Jewelry program. With PAG at 4 I had to drop the AC Sensitivity to below 70 to tame the beast. I dropped the PAG to 3 and was able to run the AC Sensitivity up to around 75 or 76 but the DFX still didnt really nail the coins with ID as good as with the MXT. I am very impressed with the MXT to say the least and for now the 10X12 SEF is gonna stay on it for deep seeking. I still love my DFX with the DX-1 and the 6X8 SEF coil and it will still be my go to machine for everyday hunting. I am not willing to give up my Tone ID, VCO pinpointing, Backlight and the ability to customize the DFX for just about every situation for an extra inch of depth if that. All in all I am very pleased with both my detectors and I think I have a good combo.

Don,t be surprised by the MXT, Most people want a 1500.00 detector and pass the MXT up. have had my MXT for about 14 years and i know it is one of the best detectors out there. Try and not let the cat out of the bag, for if every one got a MXT there would not be much left for us. I have had some of the top of the line detectors, and still go back to my MXT. After a while you will learn the ring sound from pull tabs. Just take your time and dig alot of foil and tabs till you can tell the sound of a gold ring. Good luck, i know you got good detector just find a good old house and yard.

I'm impressed by the 10" on a dime part. Were those depths measured legit or just guesstimated? Also. a 10 by 12 DD coil is going pretty hardcore - there we'rent any issues with EMI or stability in general? - that's damn good! Did you try these same targets with one of the stock coils? I'd be curious to see how they do - I have the 950 right now, but would like to add a couple of additional coils later.

The 10X12 SEF is the only coil I used in the test but once the weather allows, I will get back out there and try it with the 950 and the D2. My two favorite coils are Detech SEF's the 6X8 and the 10X12. I rarely use my other coils.

MXT's are great machines. It was when it came out and will be a great machine far into the future. The only suggestion I might throw in is maybe consider the Eclipse 5.3 I use that coil 90% of the time, but then again I hunt some pretty iron infested sites. I found it to perform better in iron dense sites. I worked a 8x6 SEF for several months in a ghost town. It is a great coil and will do you good. But at the end of the day the 5.3 proved to be the better coil at separation and tighter VDI numbers. Plus it makes the MXT machine balance so well with that coil on. In more open areas with less targets, I usually just use my 9" spider coil and on occasion if needed but very rarely I will use my 10 x 12 SEF. For a LARGE coil I preferred it over the D2 and the 12" coils.

Is this the 10x12 SEF that Kellyco sells as optimised for the v-series? I was looking on their site and I couldn't see any 10x12 SEF specifically for the MX series machines.

Yes the 10 x 12 SEF white coil will work on the MXT and M6 MX5 machines but are V rated to also work with the V3i and VX3

Absolutely, and mine is v rated but works great. It will stay on my MXT most of the time like the 6x8 SEF stays on my DFX. Depending on the situation and conditions, I will use one or the other. I also have the 4X6 for really trashy areas but rarely have to use it.

I wanna get an invite to that church sometime to see and hear what you find as a tone and "good" vid on the 10 inch dime. If your MXT is seeing a 10" buried dime here in north Texas soil, I'll enjoy working that particular buried test-garden item with my M6 and V3i. Thanks, martin
