A Little Silver Today, Coins & Ringy-Dingy

Well, I was on my way to hunt around the fields and creek around the CCC built picnic area in the Gila. An irrestible urge caused the Plymouth to turn off into a pull out just before the picnic areas. I just found a few copper pennies among the eclectic mixture of Deer & Javalina remains, an assortment of new and used condoms, and all the usual suspects. I thought "OK, I get 20 minutes here, then move on". Another irrestiblstible urge caused me to wander down a barely visible overgrown road, leftover from settlers, loggers or miners. In a very small clearing I was very happily surprised to pull a Silver 1952 S Rosie!. The next two signals were both 1942 Nickels. One appear to have a mint defect and no mint mark, the other has a large 'S' mark over Monticello (which I believe makes it a Silver war nickel, right?). Both are well-circulated, but I would appreciate opinions, especially on the defect one. The Rosie is in pretty good shape. After spending too much time checking the area for more treasures, I made my way back out, finding the Silver ring with the missing stone at the base of a tree. No mark, my guess is that it was a student project and had a turquoise stone in it (couldn't find the stone...).

So then, this County cop pulls up to check me out and we end up chatting for about 45 minutes. He had some great stories, metal detecting and otherwise. One time in Arizona (near Prescott) he was hiking with his uncle and found a spur wedged in between some rocks. They look around, and there's another spur (both with a U.S. stamp) Then, they find the belt buckle and finally, an old, corroded gun. His uncle kept the items and cleaned up the gun. He was a pretty interesting guy.

Tigger was about to have to go without his Salmon Florentine (gasp!!), so I headed to the park and picked up a few bucks in change plus 13 copper pennies (still checking them, no pics) and I had also hit the Skateboard park for an hour on Thursday, Cherry-picking $5 before the after school crowd. I then went back over some previously hunted areas in the park area nice and slow (this is the park where I found the saloon token a while back). Pulled 25 Copper pennies and 13 zinx, not a key date or double die in the lot, dang.

That's all the news that's fit to print (or not) from Silver CIty - May your finds be shiny and bountiful!!

Great hunt William!:garrett:

Nice!...Looks like maybe that ring had some turquiose in it at one time???

HH,

1942 I read they made some regular nickles then later in the year started coming out with the silver war nickles. I also found a 1942 regular one myself earlier this year and had to figure out why too.

That's my guess, Gopher. I'll take another look for the stone next trip, then again, it may have fallen out elsewhere and she tossed the ring. It's a lightweight, but it still counts!!!! heh.
I was just happy to dig some Silver - and in a very unlikely location. That was my first silver war nickel and I'm trying to study up and see if the other one with the irregularity is worth anything.
