Hi all. I'm always trying something and often find I'm still learning. In this case I put a very small gold earring and a small gold chain down to test. I was using my Silver Sabre umax that I had modified by replacing the all metal pinpoint button with a toggle switch so that I can run in all metal without holding down a button. The SSumax has a bit of built in discrimination that hides smaller iron, nails, bits of wire etc. This is with the disc. knob turned to minimum. with sensitivity on 10, 7" concentric coil no response on either target. Next I tried with the all metal mode and got good, solid hits. I then tried my DeLeon and Conquistador and they both got good hits in discrimination mode and all metal. I'm passing this on for two reasons. First it shows that we can depend on all metal to give a signal pretty much anytime on any thing and also to point out that one should check the machine they're using to make sure that some settings don't miss targets you would expect to hear.
Keep on diggin'

Hey Bill,
Theres a reason alot of us use disc as you well know. Your partially right about your first reason, even in all metal that will still depend on the detectors ability to detect a certain target. Case it point would be the minelab sovereign, whether in disc or all metal, that machine will not detect the thinner chains or smaller gold charms or earrings. Id guess there are other detectors that are this way also. in other words, just because a detector is set in all metal doesnt mean its going to hit on every target.
I agree with you on your second reason. I have a variety of gold items that I check every detector I buy with and know where I need to set the disc knob to be able to locate those targets Im after, which is usually gold. now the vaquero I just got will also knock out very small iron on the lowest disc setting, yet it will bang away on the smallest gold chains and earrings Ive found also. now that sounds great but it also bangs away on rusted bottle caps and bolts/nails. Now when I turn up the disc on the Vaquero to just click on those iron objects, so I know not to dig them, Ive lost smaller gold.
On the Sovereign at the lowest disc setting it also takes out small iron and gives a broken clipped signal on rusty bottle caps and bolts/nails. There is a window of smaller gold that I can hit with the Sov but not with the Vaquero, depending on the disc settings as you see. I hope Ive explained that correctly. Im no electrical/electronics person but I sure pay attention to how detectors work and what they can do.
I really believe they all have places they work best depending on what your after and also that the location plays a large role also. So far I think the Vaquero is a dynamite little detector and actually Im a little suprised I havent found any gold earrings with it so far. Usually beaches have those laying around because most detectors cant find them, but this will.

I don't have the Sabre but was curious about the mod replacing the pinpoint button with a toggle switch. Is there an advantage of using a toggle switch instead of a push button switch that's not momentary. Push & release to change and hold state - push & release again to toggle back to original state.
Most times I like use use of all metal - gives a better indication of of how much stuff is in the ground. Then can change to a low discrimination to knock out iron. But sometimes the all metal can drive me nuts in the really high trash areas.

I used the toggle switch mainly because I had one. A push on, push off button would work just as well. If you try it, the easiest way is to just replace the push button. I, at first tried to add the toggle in conjunction with the push button by way of a wiring diagram I was given. Turned out it didn't work and through trial and error I discovered the toggle needed to be in series with the push button. By the time I had things figured out, I had the toggle soldered in and no connection to the pushbutton. Everything worked just fine so I decided to leave well enough alone at that point rather than possibly messing up something serious. I do like being able to run in all metal without holding the pushbutton down continually. I think Tesoro should have used a push button that remained on until pushed again. It would have been just as good for pinpointing and much handier for using all metal.

Neil, yes you have explained that correctly! Those are very good points. I was told by Dick Shultz at Minelab that the Sovereign is not good on tiny gold nuggets which it will not signal on but has the strongest discriminating circuit. With the Sovereign you can knock out rusty bottle caps and bolts/nails to a broken clipped signal and still get smaller gold. With the Vaquero this smaller gold cannot be detected when the rusty bottle caps and bolts/nails are discriminated out.

But the Vaquero will find smaller gold than the Sovereign as it is better in those low trash areas for tiny earings, etc.
