A little copper & a little silver (+ military hat device?)

Did a short hunt at IH park Sunday. This time I tried my exc. 6 in. DD coil for the first time at this location. First target I dug was a small sterling ring at about 3 inches. The site is still giving up IHs and wheats but no silver coins this time.
The photo shows a brass or copper "letter" type device. It is folded over at each end and if it was unfolded I think it would form a "C". I know we all hope for the best but it has the appearance of being military. I was wondering if it might be a device for a military shako or hat. Any opinions would be appreciated.
This time:
3 IHs: 1882, 1900, 1907
5 wheats including a 1915
sterling ring
small key
US service button (iron back)

Thanks for sharing, Bruce in Ct

Nice stuff !! :clap:How many IH's does that make ?

Bruce the key to what you're relic is , is right there with you. The service button you have there is 1900 to 1920 period. Especially if the backmark sais american button co. newark new jersey. these new jersey button companies made buttons for the Spanish american war and world war one. The C" pin that you have there is probably a cavalry insignia pin.. In both these wars even though tanks replaced horses in world war 1 It was still known as the cavalry. George Patton and General Black Jack Pershing were both in the US army and armored cavalry. So if I had to Guess by just looking at you're pictures and not the marks if they're are any on the backs of them because some varieties were unmarked I'd say that button and that pin were brothers.
congrats! bothof those are very nice finds.

Thanks for the reply cavenm01. The button is (was) iron-backed, which disintegrated. The letter insignia is about the size of a half dollar and I couldn't make out any markings. Markings might be under one of the folded over ends but I didn't want to chance breaking it by trying to unfold it. It appears to have a pin type fastener as you can see in the photo but I wasn't sure if that would have been a military type of fastener. I have found other military buttons in this park including civil war era.
