A little bit of gold

I haven't been around much this spring/summer. Mainly because I've been limited on hunting due to a bad back and 30" of rain for the month of May! I normally hunt this giant lake I live by. But there's been so much rain, the lake has flooded and it's going over the spillway. I've attached a couple of pics of the spillway. This is only the fifth time it's been over since the lake was built in 1944. And it's gone over on TWO separate occasions this spring alone!
The first pic is where I would normally hunt. But it's about 15' deep now, lol.

These next two pics are of the water going over the spillway. It got a little over 5 feet above the spillway level.

Fortunately, the spousal unit and I had a week long trip planned for the barrier reef island of Port Aransas, on the Texas coast. Last year I found a very nice James Avery ring in the surf. So I was ready to get out of town and do some hunting. Back be damned! The first day all I found was clad. And that was mostly in the dry sand. The next day I wandered over a scratchy high tone, shallow and the vdi not settling on any one number...or ten. I reached down and waved my hand around the sand and came up with a China stamped junk ring with a 14k white gold necklace with a 14k heart drop, wrapped all together. What a nice surprise! I've found coins all in the same hole, but NEVER jewelry! Anyway, these next pics aren't that great, but you can tell what it is. And it's funny cause all of a sudden, the spousal unit is laying claim to the necklace and doesn't think this is such a silly, expensive hobby after all! LoL I didn't find anything else of any value. A lot of clad, some fishing weights, lures, etc.

Nice digs and glad to see you posting. Hope your back gets back to good hunting form for you. Yep, those scratchy signals can turn out to be neat targets. Good job on digging it. HH jim tn

Way to go. I, too, was amazed at the amount of rain, and flooding, around here. This is only my third year living here, and I've never seen so much moisture. Of course, Colorado is having an all-time wet spell as well. Funny how things change when there's some goodies they can lay claim to...

WOW! You know, that water level may stay up for many years..effectively locking that gold down in there for the next generation of detectorists...

same thing here...I'm hunting in neck deep water where last year was dry sand..no gold at all for me this year yet.... .good thing you got into it when you had a chance...hope your back gets better...whats your Dad doing now as far as hunting goes? He was a gold hound down in that lake right? Nice score on that chain!:clapping:
Mud.

Glad you were able to get out and also find some nice gold. Congratulations. Take care of the back. That's why I prefer water hunting, but only about 10 hours of any detecting so far this year. Keep the wife happy with finds like these and she might buy you a new detector one of these days.

Thanks guys! Mud- you have me confused with another guy, Mike. Him and his dad find lots of jewelry and other stuff. Which reminds me, I haven't talked to him all summer long. I don't know how they've fared with all the high water. I think they hunt the same lake a lot. Or did. The water stopped going over the spillway, but they have the flood gates wide open. It all depends on the flooding down river, into east Texas, on how much water they release. Too bad they can't send it all to California, or somewhere else where it's still in a drought.

Sorry about that Gruff..Its no excuse, but I drink a lot!..:lmfao:.And you Texicans all look alike....

thats right! He's Ayeti! You should call him and have him check in!...havnt seen him in a while...I bet theres a lot of new rigs for sale this Fall..this weather has made for one tough year hunting...I can imagine a noob getting discouraged...well, keep pounding away, this sport has got to be good for a guy right?...

Nice job on the bling!!! That looks like a great hunting spot!

Thanks! That first pic is a huge sandy beach that's been around since 1944. Well, 1944 is when the the Red River was impounded to form the lake. Last summer I found a 1944 Walking Liberty in that area. But man is it loaded with trash! And rocks! And now, water...

Fun post to read, thanks. Yup, the wardens sure can put the grab on the shiny stuff. :detecting:
