I have been detecting for the past 20 years, mostly relics and coins. I use the AT Pro most of the time and would like to know if any of you AT Pro users are using a larger coil other than the stock coil for open fields. I have been looking at the NEL Tornado and am wondering if it is worth the money and will it give me enough depth to be worth buying. Any info. will be greatly appreciated,

Thanks Blink

I am not using anything larger than the stock Garret 8.5 x 11 DD and 9 x 12 Conc. coils.

I guess it really just depends on 'how deep do you need to go'?

When using DD and Concentric coils, they reach a depth approximately equal to their size.

So an 8.s x 11 coil reaches down about 11 inches, give or take an inch or two depending on a few factors (soil mineralization, wet/dry, etc).

the 9 x 12 coil reaches down about 12 inches, give or take an inch or two.

So on and so on as you increase the size.....get a 15 in coil reach down 15 in, 17 in coil reach down 17inches, etc.

Plus.....how deep a hole do you really want to dig....hehehe.

I do a lot of detecting in REALLY trashy areas though, so typically for me the smaller coils (5 x 8 is really nice - standard on AT Gold) work a bit better to help sort through it all.

But I like the 8.5 x 11 DD coil too (standard on AT Pro).....we have highly mineralized soil, so it reaches a bit deeper than the Conc. coils.

Imo they are better on coverage and depth and I did hit a target that my buddy could not hit with the stock coil when we were hunting. I used the tornado as the everyday coil when I used my pro and just bought my son tn law a new pro with the nel tornado worthe money to me I had the attack too but it was just to much maybe the storm would be great.

I have both the 5x8 and 8.5x11 factory coils for my AT Pro. I like the 5x8 better as it is lighter and better in trashy areas. I spent several months detecting a series of lots (12) that all had the homes destroyed in 2002. I got permission to detect them and realized that I was not going to find old coins but it was a nice place to practice. I took my time and detected all the lots twice with the larger coil and then one more time with the small coil. I found clad coins each time and found more with the small coil as I probably had dug up most of the junk using the larger coil. After watching a series of you tube videos, I purchased the NEL sharpshooter coil for my AT Pro. The instruction with the coil advised to turn the sensitivity down to 50% when setting the ground balance and then turning it back up once it is set. Just to practice with it I spent two hours a day on just two of the previously detected lots. The first day I found 6 clad quarters, 10 clad dimes and 19 penny's. The second hunt produced about the same number on the part I had not covered. I don't know if I did such a poor job the first two times or if the NEL coil is more sensitive. I've used the AT Pro for over 4 years so I 'm pretty familiar with it. The last trip over to the same two lots was a short one. Heavy rains had covered the lots with over a foot of water and by the time the water subsided the grass was too high to hunt. I found several areas were work trucks had parked and killed the grass . I found several clad pennies and then in an area about the size of a dinner plate I got multiple hits all with good numbers. I dug a large plug and ended up with two nickles, three dimes and twenty-five pennies, all of which were clad. Not much in value but a lot of fun.

I had one for my ace250. It was good in certain area with wide open space. I tried at the beach... Drove me a little crazy. That stock coil is pretty damn good on the At pro. I have the 5x8. I seem to use more time with it. I think I like the stock better!
