A List Of Larger Coils (Bigger Than 10" ) For The Sovereign/Excalibur...

Got this in a PM. Name scrubbed clean to keep the question anomomous. Figured it would be useful here...

Name Withheld said:
You might be able to help here. 14 inch or 15 inch dd coils for sov gt...I can't seem to find any anywhere. Do you know if a place selling them? Was hoping to find a coiltek with no luck. Thanks

All Sovereign/Excalibur coils are DD, with only exception being an 8" concentric Detech makes. So here's the big coil list of coils bigger than 10"...

WOT...made by Coiltek. Sold by them or via Coil Tek outlets. I always heard it was 14.25" in size but somebody recently said it's 14.5". First I've heard that but who knows? Coiltek calls it a 15" coil. Heaviest coil for the Sovereign, besides the old Minelab 10" heavy BBS version before the 10" Tornado. Also I'm sure hefty probably are the 14 to 18" open framed Detech Excelerators. The WOT seems very popular among beach or water Excalibur hunters, and part of that I'm sure is probably it's round shape so drag might not be too bad in the water.

The 12.5, 14.(?), 16.(?), and 18.(?)" Excelerators by Detech are no longer sold in the US but are in the UK. Never heard much about those coils even though they've been around a long time, so that says something I think.

Sun Ray S-12 12.5" Intruder. Sun Ray has just now discontinued this coil in a Sovereign/Excalibur compatible version. Available from them or Sun Ray authorized dealers. Also seems very popular among Excalibur water hunts, probably again due to it's round shape not making drag much more than the 10" Tornado? Much lighter than the WOT.

Detech SEF 18x15, 15x12, or 12x10. No longer carried in US by Kellyco in the Sov/Excal version, which is the only authorized dealer in the US. Not sure if they are still ordering the 12x10 here and there, since it appears (?) a new batch has come in after the last batch they ordered after GT was discontinued, because I could have swore people were saying that batch was sold out but yet I hear as of right now they have 16 in stock, which maybe means they got another batch in? Kellyco did say they'd order more if the first post-GT getting canned batch sold quick enough, otherwise we'd have to get orders by 10 together for them to order more. I hope that first test batch to see how fast they sold after the GT was canned sold fast and that this is indeed yet another batch, because that would mean perhaps more in the future here will be available in the only US outlet for them (Kellyco).

Detech 13" Ultimate. Very new coil and actually measured 12.5" by 13" when I measured the loaner I had. I think it was 13" wide and only 12.5" long unless I got that backwards from memory. Still looks completely round to the eye, so I was surprised to measure that. Came out with the Sov/Excal version about 6 or so months back while the FBS version had been out for a bit longer, but still very new for those machines as well. Kellyco also no longer carries the Sov/Excal version of this coil, but maybe they will with pre-set orders in the future?

Detech is located in the UK and makes coils for a bunch of machines, even some machines never real popular and discontinued a long time ago such as the Musketeer, or currently made machines that I'm sure don't have nearly the numbers of coil compatible units that the Excalibur and all prior GT Sovereign models have out there that can all use the same BBS compatible coils. For this reason I suspect they'll continue to make Sov/Excal compatiable coils for a long time to come.

I believe Kellyco has said that if they don't order any more 12x10 or Ultimates or other Detech coils for the Sov/Excal, since the Sovereign has been discontinued and it's their policy not to carry coils for discontinued machines (but the Excalibur is still being made and swapping coils seems to be a popular mod on them), they will at least be willing to order another shipment of a coil if we ban together say around 10 people with a committed order.

Even if Detech one day stops making versions of a coil for the Sovereign/Excal one day far down the road, I bet if we get a pre-order together through Kellyco Detech will run off a batch for anybody who has a standing order, as Detech seems to pride themselves on making coils for a bunch of machines and seem very versatile in re-tooling for a run for one machine or another, although with all the machines they make all these coils for they seem plagued by back orders. Even almost two years ago or so you'd hear of FBS or BBS users waiting on back orders to be filled so their coil would finally ship. Those UK guys who tinker with detectors seem to pride themselves on pushing old or never popular detectors to max out peformance via mods, homemade coils, etc...So seems making coils for obscure or discontinued machines is right up Detech's alley perhaps?

As for a weight list of all the larger Sov/Excal coils, and also a list of other smaller coils and the weights and sizes of them too, click on the coil sticky at the top of the forum. I think either near the end of the first or second page you'll find a link to a thread with a coil weight chart. I've been working on re-doing that chart with more info and up to date weights and such but it's slow going and tedious. Sooner or later I'll finish and post it in that thread.

Hope this helps answer your questions. As to which larger coil is right for you, search the forum for old posts. Ignore mine as I'm a 12x10 fan boy. You know where I stand on thinking this is the best coil I ever used, stock or aftermarket, concentric or DD, for any machine I've ever owned. The 10" Tornado is the best stock coil I ever owned on a machine but the 12x10 steps all aspects of performance up a few notches over it IMO...Good luck...

PS- There is also the Coiltek Platypus that I'd guess you could classify in the large coil class above...8.5x11.5" in size. Again though, hardly hear anything about this coil from people though it, like the Joey, has been around for years...

Forgot to mention, if you click on the coil sticky thread that is always at the top of this forum, you'll find pics of various coils and links to field reports on them and such that should help you along with your decisions...

Critter....The 15" Coiltek or WOT is exactly 14 1/2" with the skid cover off..I was checking a few of my coils and measured mine again...Its by far the best coil i've ever used in Beach Sand...I can dig Sparkler Wire down 19" in All Metal and still have a decent signal..Its a heavy coil but you can always mount your machine on your belt or use a bungee....John...

If you measured it then must be the real size then. Have had several people in the past tell me it's 14.25" in actual size, where as Coiltech calls it a 15" coil I think, but direct from you there it is- 14.5" then. Yea, have heard many say it's a really deep coil for them on the beach mostly, but have read of people using it in crop fields and plucking some rather deep coins with it. One of these days I'll either get a loaner or buy a used one if the price is right just so I can run it through some field head to heads with other coils and such just to see what it'll do in contrast to them.

One of the things I like about the SEF coils is that their unique shape seems to make them ride on and see less ground, which I feel is part of the key to getting more depth in my soil. For instance, a straight 12" sized round coil might not show depth gains over the stock 10" Tornado in my soil maybe, just due to it sucking up too much ground stew and washing out a target at depth, where as the 12x10 seems to have a very "tight" and sharp field to punch more cleanly into the ground to me. Now, with the 13" Ultimate, which is 13" wide and 12.5" long, even though it's round it's field seems very "tight" or "focused" too to me. It's lay out reminds me of the Pro Coil suspiciously, which I wonder if that has something to do with it, because we all know of the reputation of the Pro Coil being excellent for a stock coil on a Minelab. The stock 10" Tornado to me is also a heck of a stock coil. Doesn't suffer in any respect IMO.

Back to the WOT- I remember reading long ago about guys finding it would pop coins on edge like they never seen before. This was long before the SEFs or Ultimate came out. I've seen this same thing with the SEFs/Ultimate, although once again the 10" Tornado is rather good at it too. What I suspect is that as a coil gets bigger, perhaps the eddy currents are at a bit less of a sharp "downward" angle, and instead have more of a "sideways" angle in the field, and so hits the side of the coin better? Only thing I can think of, and would then make sense with these bigger coils perhaps?

Coil Weights- Been debate off and on on various forums about the weight of the SEFs, S-12, etc. Part of the confusion I think as to just which is lighter has to do with the FBS versions being weighed versus the BBS versions. At least with the SEFs, it appears their weight for the BBS Sov/Excal units is a good bit lighter than the FBS versions for the Explorer/Etrac/Safari. Also have seen conflicting weights reported by people with the WOT coil, so I suspect it's again due to the FBS versus BBS versions. Hoping to sort that out with the new coil weight chart. Just avoiding working on it for a while as what I've done so far in the new chart, listing more info for each coil beside just weight and size, is rather tedious to do and burned me out real quick. Sooner or later I'll kill a six pack and finish the stupid thing.
