GRAY GHOST

hello all. a buddy of mine visited an old buddy of his who owns a small plot within sight of some of the longest and most masive earthworks around petersburg. the place is quite small, being nearly three acres, and had been hunted several times in the past. that didn't deter me at all, because, nooone gets it all. there had to be something for me there.
the moment i set my coil on the ground, i began digging lead melt... and lots of it. that's always a good sign. several "cocoon" bullets followed [ they look like cocoons, but over time, the swampy ground forms layer upon layer of hard dirt around 'em.] cocooned bullets are usually quite deep, so with the hardened covering over them, they don't sound "right" when you hit them. a broken sword hanger came out, then a poncho or tent grommet, some brass horseshoe nails, a lead ammo pouch finial, [probably cs] a carved chess piece, several percussion caps, a few three ringers, a really odd cut in half enfield recovered from one of the cocoons, and a pair of brass whatzits with holes in 'em. i think they go on the end of something... found three feet apart. the cut up [not by me] north carolina seal button face was great to find too. the ground is kind to brass, so i woulda loved to pull the whole thing out! we're definetly on the cs side of things.
so, don't ever believe 'em when they tell you the place has been hunted out or try to deter you by saying it's been hit hard in the past. this post is living proof of that. every bit of what you see in the pics came from a 30 ft. x 50 ft. area. strangely enough, our host didn't find a single thing on the earthworks but a rotten lincoln cent. it seems whoever did hunt the place in the past hit the earthworks pretty hard, and ignored the other areas that might have had some nice relics.
as always, all relics and coins were dug on private property with the landowner's express permission. wouldn't do it any other way, either. thanks for reading, and hh!
