A good day of detecting.... finally! (coin pics)

I just returned from a great day of detecting with my brother (Mapper65), my mom, and my uncle. I won't go too deep into the place other than it was a really cool old homesite, I think Mapper65 is going to post some pics or a video of it.

The ground was the worst, so may minerals that it was difficult to find anything. I ended up eventually doing well, and surprisingly these coins in the picture all came from a 20' square area! There was also a 1941 Merc, a silver Roosevelt, 2 more Indians, a couple of wheaties, and some modern stuff. I may have FINALLY gotten the hang of this Terra!

The Indians are 1898, 1890, 1906, 1859, 1881
The Seated dime is 1887

Great finds!

I've had my 705 for two weeks, and with the help of Randy's book, I'm starting to think that I'm getting the hang of it too. Though yesterday, I ran into some horribly trashy ground and had a heck of a time.

I believe that I see a DD coil in my near future.

Congrats. on the great finds especially the 1859 Indian and the Seated Dime....still have not found one yet. Can I ask what TID's your Indians came in as? Mine have come in at between 28-32 but occasionally I get some fluctuation if they are really deep.

Excellent Day! IH cents are great. But don't you just love seeing a seated Lady coming from the ground? I know they still make me do the happy dance! :hot: Thanks for posting. HH Randy

Boy I would love to dig Seated, and I have only dug 4 or 5 Injuns since I started. Then again I do not have nearly the time in the hobby as most of you guys do. I do find that this machine has some real strong points.

In the soil you were hunting in were you running in automatic tracking? I have found in a lot of circumstances Tracking really gets down there, keeps the machine in tune. Seems that in the heavy trash though it depletes depth and in iron it can get more punch. Any opinions on this?

I feel a Seated coming this summer though and I am looking forward to it. (positive thinking, RIGHT)

Nice Hunt
Jeff

My Injuns were coming in around 28-32, the seated lady was 42-44 if I remember. The ground at this place was really mineralized and it was tough. Not that it was trashy, but it seemed as though the targets were very small. The depth was good, the ID was good, but if you were sweeping too quickly you would pass everything right over. There were no targets like I'm used to when you say Yep, that is definately a coin. You really had to pay attention, and if you thought that you had a good target, you had to pinpoint very tightly as if it were a very small target.

As far as automatic tracking, Mapper65 keeps telling me that he is against it, personally I turn it ON and OFF and I check my balance frequently just to see where it is. If I move in a different direction or in a different spot, I enable the tracking to let it hone in on a good number. When I find something I turn it OFF and usually leave it OFF until I move areas again. I don't want it trying to track when I'm not swinging it and it's laying there on the ground. My thoughts are still out on tracking, I read guys adding and subtracking from the auto number, I need to get more experience with it. My old machine was manual GB and I set it and checked it every half hour or so unless I moved spots.

If I am using Tracking, I like to set my 705 with a slight positive ground balance. To me, it seems like I'm fooling the detector into thinking the ground is a bit more mineralized than it actually is. As such, it does chirp a bit, kind of like when you have the sensitivity too high. But I'm convinced that it doesn't mask out targets like running with too much sensitivity can do. To set the gr tracking offset with a positive offset, you have to use the minus pad. I know that sounds backward of what some other makes and models might do to adjust the GB. But when you think about it, lowering the number is what you would do IF the ground was more mineralized. So lower the number to make it more positive. And raise the number if you should ever want to hunt with a negative offset. Give that positive offset a shot next time you're out, and in the mood for tracking. I think you might be surprised at how much louder those signals can be. JMHO HH Randy
