A Goldbug question

Mike Hillis

Well-known member
I have been reading where folks are cranking the Goldbug to near max or at max sensitivity settings and are able to still run a stable detector that seems to be hot on small low conductors.

But...how is the sensitivity to small low conductors if you don't max it out? What if you are only running mid levels or low levels of sensitivity. Is it still hot on small low conductors?

Thanks in advance for the answers.
Mike

I mean any detector loses sensitivty as its SENSITIVITY is turned down.....so of course you would.....although i assume that was not quite what you were really asking.

So to answer what i think you meant.....No it does not. In the sense that sure..as you drop the disc gain you will lose some depth but only in proportion to any other target as sensitivty is dropped. It is still very hot on low to mid stuff at half gain...you may lose 2 inches on depth as would be expected but it still hits them hard.

Best i can do in trying to interpret your question.

I think you would be very pleased The machine is on steroids up to 4 inches and then mellows out slightly. I have the F5 and would not get rid of it for anything. If I where to say how much better the machine responds to small conductors defiantly. The one thing I do not like about it is you have no phase readout in disc mode so if you are in an area of changing conditions you will not know. I know disc mode is much more forgiving than AT. I really like the F5 with the "real time" feed back on ground conditions. The depth indicator in disc is worthless where in At the dirt meter is valuable. All you have to do is listen to the target and you will get an idea of the depth. I would think you will like the machine better separation in heavy iron, the depth is about what any VLF will provide. Good luck

Take care

Thanks Scott,

Reason I ask is that I lose the small stuff at higher gain settings. My ground signal masks them. I've learned to hunt my small targets with low to medium gain settings. That is one of the reasons I like the F5 so well. I can still get "bite" with lower gain settings by using high positive threshold settings.

I don't think my ground would allow me to run a high gain setting even on a Goldbug. But I would still want that "bite" on small targets.

What is your experience with the Goldbug and mineralization?

Thanks Bob,
Nothing could replace the F5.
But I'd like to compliment it with something that would hit the smaller gold chains harder. Only it also has to deal with my ground mineralization as well, which means it has to operate well at lower sensitivity settings.

Mike if you give me some of your typical settings on your F5 I will setup mine the same and compare it to the Gold bug se with various gold items that my wife has I will do it with 5 dd coils on both machines I have the 11dd for the F5 but not for the Bug maybe Santa will be good to me this year.

Thanks Bob,
These are my typical settings for the stock coil. I set my threshold first and then my gain with the coil held still for gold jewelry items. These settings will allow me to find bb size targets (3 to 5MM) and the small round clasps of chains a couple of inches down. Mostly grass roots level in my ground conditions. The 65+5 is usually chattery.

Gain at 35, Threshold +7 and +8
Gain at 45, Threshold +5, +6
Gain at 55, Threshold +5
Gain at 65, Threshold +5

My ground phase number is usually between 77 and 80. My FE0304 meter is maxed out.

Appreciate your effort.
