A glimpse into my life: Why I seldom watch TV..............

Kelley (Texas)

New member
Earlier this afternoon, while visiting with a friend of mine on the computer, he asked me if I watched the cowboy movies on the AMC channel on cable TV. I told him that I had never heard of the AMC channel and that I did not watch TV very often. I felt that he was getting frustrated with me because I could not really tell him if we had cable or dish TV, much less even what channels were available on our TV. I told him that when Debbie arrived home that I would ask her and let him know if we had the AMC channel on our TV. When Debbie provided me with the information, I sent him the e-mail posted below.

Knowing that some of you folks are interested in the life style of some of our fellow members on this Forum, I decided to post it for you to read. I guess that in this modern electronic age that it is difficult for some folks to grasp the fact that some of us are indeed from the old school and do not watch TV very often. I hope that you enjoy the small glimpse into my early years of life.

"First of all, forget the little TV dish on the roof of my house, it is not connected. Debbie said that I was correct in that we do not have cable or dish TV, our TV comes through our telephone line. Next, we have over 400 channels and AMC is one of them. We checked and yes, there are some old cowboy movies shown on Saturdays. The number of the channel down here is #795 for AMC. I am being honest with you, I seldom watch TV, so seldom that I do not even know how to work the remote which must have over 100 buttons on it. Most of the rare times that I watch TV is if I walk by the TV in the kitchen and spot something that Debbie is watching that is interesting to me, then I may sit down and watch part of it. I was not trying to act dumb, and I was not trying to wind you up, I really do not watch TV as per se, and I really did not know the answers to your questions. I guess folks have a hard time grasping that some people do not watch TV. Growing up on a farm, the only time us children watched TV was on Saturday mornings and we did watch cowboy movies. We only got to watch TV if we had done all our chores and was not in trouble for doing something wrong during the week. Unfortunately for me, I was usually in some type of trouble for mischief during the week and one of the punishments was no Saturday morning TV. I remember us getting our first color TV when I was in the 11th grade of high school. It was a Sears & Roebuck brand TV. That TV never worked correctly and my parents replaced it with a TV bought at my Uncle John

Never had a lot of time for it growing up. Wooden boats were still king them, so there was always work to be done on them. Weekends we were flat out most of the time. Had a TV but seldom watched. Color set was piece of 3 colored plastic. Blue on top, pinkish in middle and green on bottom. The only show I liked was I love Lucy, Red Skelton and Dick Clark if I was around the house. That was not often except in winter months. Today, We do have Dishnetwork and I do enjoy the History Channel, NOVA, Any National Geographic programs, Travel Channel, Speed Channel. My wife likes RFDTV for her horse stuff. Of a couple of hundred channels, thats the 6 we watch along with local news and usually in the winter time. Summer, to much going on for me.

Sounds like you and the horses had the best deal.

Fred, we would have missed out on a lot of fine stories of yours if you spent your odd hours watching TV!

I would be fine if TV just suddenly disappeared from the planet, but I have a wife that can't seem to live without it!

Unfortunatly she feels that if I am otherwise occupied I must not want to spend time with her and I get caught up in the blasted thing just to keep peace in the house!

I envy you for sure if you can get away from it and I think all our lives would be better off without it!

Regards,

CJ

It sure did me no harm. Then when we finally had TV there was only one half watchable channel out in the boonies where i was anyway.
Books were my passion when i wasn't running loose on the range like a young Coyote:biggrin:

The one exception is I seldom read or want to read any books about Vietnam, but I love anything Civil War and western. Kelley (Texas) :)

A busy woman is a happy woman, and a happy woman will cut you some slack. Point being, if you want to go fishing rather than cut the yard, chances are if she is happy and busy doing something, she will cut you some slack. On the other hand, she be in a bad mood, you better cut the yard. You just need to learn how to take control...you can do it. Kelley (Texas) :)

it is the Discovery Channel, Nature, Crime 360, The First 40 Hours, the Learning Channel and stuff like that. I watched one of those reality shows, the one where the fat pervert was on an island. It was the first season and I watched the last show because we were at a friends house and he just HAD to watch it :D I have not watched much news lately but rarely watch much in the summer. Since I am usually up at 6 am and it is too early to wake the neighbors with yard chores I watch some. I have a recorder and just copy what I watch. That way I never have to watch any commercials:thumbup: and I can choose what I want to watch and when.

Mary watches every cooking show she can and it is too my benefit. She is a Vegetarian but cooks up some mighty good meat dishes for this carnivore!!

I rarely watch anything I can not learn something from. Oh yeah, I watch some Handyman shows too. I learn a lot about landscaping and woodworking that way. In the summer I watch much less but in the winter in Roscommon it beats talking to the cat.

and I had trouble trying to figure out how to use it recently when I wanted to watch a series of movies about the Marines during WW II. I had heard about that series on the forums and figured it would be interesting to watch, especially since it was raining outside. I just plum gave up because I could not figure out how to work that little hand held remote control thing. Life was simpler when you had a TV with only three channels, and you did not need a hand held remote control thing to make the TV work. Kelley (Texas) :)

We use the Television for watching videos... and that is it. If I wanted to, I could have reception, I guess. I know my sister mentioned that Alice and I have no reception to one of her friends and they asked 'How do they live without it?"

In point if fact, very well Thank you
