A Garrett phantom signal quirk explained..

Uncle Willy

New member
This rarely happens but it happens with Garrett coils. I've experienced it about three times. This happens only in grass or weeds. You get a signal that pinpoints right under the coil but you dig and dig and no target. Check at the base of the grass several inches out from the edge of the coil and you'll most likely find one or more coins laying there. The edge of the coil picks them up but pinpoints as if they are right under the coil. Another Garrett mystery explained.

First time it happened to me I about went nuts trying to recover the target, then I started searching the grass several inches out from the edge of the coil and there laid three quarters flat on the ground hidden by the grass.

here's a Question for u Willy do u lose disc. after about 4" with the sniper coil? it seems my sniper does, is this common with that coil?

Wow, never had that happen. I have had rock-solid tones and dug nothing but dirt and worms, checked the plug, dug more, gone deeper, etc and never got the tone back. I'll start looking in a broader area on top of the ground now. Thanks for the tip.

Depends on your particular ground conditions. I get decent disc beyond that. If you whip the coil over a target your disc and depth will improve. One of the pluses of a motion detector.

Had that problem at a site and found nothing. Went back to that same spot got a signal dug down and no signal or any coin. Happen to be in the same area and seen that area and said what the heck. Passed the coil over the same spot and I got tone again. Dug down and no signal but this time I had a probe and put it in the hole and the probe went off and bingo and nice three cent coin was in there all a long . Sometimes they must fall in the side of the hole on edge!

I have had that happen-- here's my 2-cents worth on it. I thought that the coin was on the surface and I drug away when I was pinpointing... My story and I am sticking to it.
