A Ganes Creek nugget from 2012

2.4 ounce gold nugget found by Dave R at Ganes Creek, Alaska in 2012 with a White's MXT. I was there that summer, the last that Ganes Creek was operated as a pay-to-mine operation. Dave scored this beauty while I was there.

They sure have found some great gold there, I wish I had gone to Ganes , but, I missed the boat on that opportunity..........

Finds like that is what drives my urge to go and try my luck.....especially before I am too old and broken up to do it!!
Very cool.

nice nugget...........

I do not know how deep the nugget was. Dave was probably using the old 950 coil. 12" round 300mm coils were also popular at Ganes Creek. Overall there is no such thing as a best coil combination. It is like asking what is the best golf club. The coil to use changes with the ground and the task at hand. In general the stock coils on metal detectors are the best "all around" coils. At Ganes the goal was big nuggets in low mineral ground so large concentric coils were popular.

Steve, that does make sense as for the coil selection. One fellow in Australia swore by the 5.3 Eclipse for specimen gold in mineralized ground. Some say the 5x10 DD is the best all around for prospecting. I have the 5 inch Excelerator and was thinking of trading the 5x10 DD for the 5.3 and you've convinced me to keep the 950 stock coil. Looking for big nuggets deep though I might be using a different detector.

I am a big fan of the 6" x 10" DD. the big coils are only for low mineral ground.
I like the little Shooter coil also. Just depends.
