A funny thing happened on the way to the ocean.(Att: PaulWv HF coil post)

There is a lake along the way that is still in winter draw down, but is still a might high from rain a couple weeks ago. However we are supposed to get heavy rain this weekend and they will close the dam this week for summer level attainment, so the one spot I have been chomping at the bit to try with the HF coil will be lost till next fall. The biting black flies are about, but there was a heavy wind and temps in the mid-forties(F),so I decided to take a chance. There is a small brook along the beach to be forded and usually in winter draw down my knee-high boots are tall enough, but not yesterday. So off come the boots and into the 36deg(F) we go,:yikes: no need for coffee for a wakeup call here.

I hunted for about 7 hours since this was going to be it for a long time. I have hit this area many times with various machines in the past, with a personal best of pulling 26 silver rings in 4 hours. My goal for the day was to try for a gold chain or bracelet since I know they have to be there, but there is also heavy foil infestation. I tried to use prospecting mode several times but the micro-foil is just overwhelming. I also tried switching back and forth mode wise, but felt I couldn't take the time penalty with what little I had available.

Before looking at the pictures please keep the following points in mind.

1. I am in gold chain hunt mindset mode(very tough target).
2. I am running very high gain at 28 on the X70, right on the cusp of instability.
3. The sand is GB'ng around 8 to 10, with black sand showing.
4. I am digging anything that might sound like an iffy, if it even grunts (-)2, I'm going for it.

Da foil.

Da al-lou-mineeeuuuummm(as my Irish friends would say).

Da hardware.

Da lead(much of the lead was ID'ng low with negative numbers popping in).

The 3 wheat cents were interesting, the green corroded ones ID'd low.

There was a nitro moment from the wanna be diamond stud upper right, turned out to be a silver mounted CZ, drat. :rage: Also the 10K gold filled ring at the bottom was a bummer.

After crossing the brook on the way back out(there were some amused onlookers, always nice to entertain the natives), I was ready for a nap in the car.

In my front yards are coins at 9+" and I find one every once in
awhile,Found one with a Explorer about 3 with XLT and 5 or 6 with a Mark 1 with a 10" loop. Also found a few with a IDX...But cant find a one with the X-terra...I know there has to be more....maybe not?
But the ground is 13 and the sen. is all the way up to 20 and no false signels...matter of face it it is so quite I sometimes think its not working.....I think all the coins are out of reach of the 8/9" coils...I havent found any either with my wifes CZ5 with the 8" coil.
Today I went out in the yard working all-metal and digging all iffy signals and found some interesting things.
Most of the ground around here is so bad it is hard to detect a coin on top of the ground with a 2 filter machine. My front yard is alot of top soil so its not bad.....I am hoping I can take the X-50 to a old park this week....

Congratulations you're the first person I recall seeing have a GB setting beyond 8. Round here on the X50 GB is 1 to 3, but mostly 2, and on the X70 8 to 15, but mostly around 10. There are some pieces of Basalt around here that are so hot that they glow in the dark.[attachment 25199 swell2.gif]

At ten inches you are reaching the limits of most detectors on penny sized targets under most conditions. I would bobb the coil in AM after I GB'd it and set sens=20, just to make sure she's not throwing any negative numbers up from the ground. Lowering sens might also help with any masking going on from trash, but I would also try removing a little soil on an iffy target to see if it's too deep to ID correctly. I've seen X machines move target ID's up and down at the fringe of detection.
