What a great day at the beach! Zach and I took off at 0830 for the Oceanfront to work the 11am low tide. It was a perfect day at the beach, flat seas with some nice waves close to the beach. I took the Surfmaster PI Pro today and gave the Excal a break. We did pretty good, found some clad, earrings and a nice Chico's silver ladies watch.
We had walked from 32nd St South to the pier at 16th St, turned around and had made it back North to 28th St when this lady in an orange bikini comes running up behind us hollering "There you are! You are the one with the water detector, right?" I told her "Yes M'am" She asked if I would help her find her lost 1/2 carat marquis cut diamond ring that she dropped 30 minutes earlier. I asked her if it was in the dry sand, telling her that dry sand drops are very easy to locate. She said "No, I dropped it out in the water, waste deep". My heart sank as we walked. I told her that in 3 years of serious water detecting, I had never found a ring out in the water that had been dropped and the owners were there looking for it. I told her I would at least try. I told her that if her husband or someone was in the water, marking the exact spot where it was dropped and had not moved it would really help. She had told her husband to stay put and not move until she got back with me. They had seen me down at the beach just yesterday and was curious about what I was doing. They were about to find out what metal detecting was all about.
As we got near the spot, I could see her husband out in the water, behind the Marjac, not budging an inch. He did good. I walked out and said "Here we go!". I started a circular grid search around them and found nothing. I went back to where her husband was standing and looked at the waves and the direction they were rolling. I told them "Let me try working in the direction of the waves". I took off at an angle from them and got about 18 feet toward the shore when I got a rock solid signal. I maneuvered the scoop to the coil and took one scoop. I checked the spot and the signal was gone which told me it was in my scoop. I brought it up, started to sift and in the bottom of the scoop was a 14k yellow gold, 1/2 carat, marquis cut $2,500.00 diamond ring.
Zach and I held up the ring and yelled, "Hey!, this yours?" You should have seen it. Her, her husband, me and Zach all jumping up and down and screaming at the same time. She was crying and gave me the biggest hug and kiss you've ever seen. Her husband gave me a bear hug. They offered me $100 and I told them no. I told them that they had just been helped by one of the Virginia Beach SurfPirates and smiled. I got a final hug and a thanks and we headed back home.
What a great day! This was my first find out in the water with the owners standing there.
