If you are running wide open-no discrimination do you still have to worry about target masking if you are using a larger coil (stock coil or larger) in trashy areas? If so, I would assume a smaller coil would be the way to go. Also if running wide open does it matter if "FAST" is turned on? Will you get quicker recovery rates running wide open as opposed to running a discrimination pattern with "FAST" on?

Yes, you still have to worry about target masking. It's a downside to any detector. I think your talking more about target averaging... which a smaller coil will help with some. Fast can help in some instances but you do give up some depth in fast but it depends on how heavy the trash is as to how much it benefits.

Chip,
There could be a semantics issue with the meaning of "masking". Masking can drive the detector into a null if the cursor falls into the discriminated out region. But, even with a wide open screen, it is possible for good target to be masked. For example, if a silver coin is under a rusty nail, then the detector may not be able to see the coin (or the cursor will get pulled far to the left). This is a form of masking.
