A Few Hours Out WIth The Gold Bug/10 inch DD Coil

I haven't had the Gold Bug out for awhile, so I grab it and the 10 inch DD coil and headed out to a local sports field. The 10 inch DD coil is amazing. It has excellent separation, good depth, easy to swing and covers a lot of ground with each sweep. For the first 30 minutes or so, I was digging pretty much every solid hit. The zinc coins, can slaw and pull tabs wore me out fast. I'm not back in shape yet and my recently broken right arm is not completely healed, so I can only dig so much in the hot heat. I decided to look mainly for gold and silver rings. I set the discrimination on 51 and dug every solid target from 51 to 58 (IMO that's the range that the majority of lost gold rings will ID) and anything over 80 that didn't size too big. I was getting solid hard hits on dimes at 5 to 6 inches, so I know it will get down even further on dimes. When I got the 92-93 hit, I just knew I had another big silver coin, because I found a Silver Dollar and a 64 Kennedy Half Dollar during the last two trips at this location. http://www.findmall.com/read.php?17,1699157 http://www.findmall.com/read.php?17,1699805 No such luck, it turned out to be a soccer coin. French coin - 66, silver ring - 81, silver pendant - 83 and the Mexican $2 coin - 10. I also managed to get around $8 dollars in clad coins.

I only tinkered with one early on, and I have been on the road from the 22nd of April until I got home last Wednesday, the 16th. I usually keep the 5" DD on my G2, sometimes switching it to my Omega, but set this weekend aside to evaluate the 5x10 DD on my G2 and, honestly, I am quite impressed!

I think my 5" DD will stay on the spare lower rod for use on either of these models, but this 5x10 DD is now my "officially assigned" coil for the G2.

You certainly were rewarded for your efforts, and I wish you the best trying to get back into better hunting condition with that mending arm.

Each model, or even different brands, can reflect a little difference in VDI numbers for certain targets or group of targets. Most of the gold rings, pendants and bracelets/neck chains I have found with the G2 range from about '48' to '61'. Maybe I am a little more kind in the amount of targets I accept, but that's how they have been running. I am referring to the range I get on my G2.

Last Tuesday, on my route home with a little detour in northern Utah and then in southern Idaho, I worked the G2 and the newer, skinnier, and versatile coil. I had problems here before with the stock 11" DD due to the many short, stiff weeds and brush. It wasn't the type of site to produce the success you had, and I congratulate you on your good day out! All the best in the future .... trying to share a town with Jim. Matter of fact ... best of luck to him trying to be a step or two ahead of you!

If you don't have a 5 x 10 DD coil. Get one! It's more fun than a barrel of monkeys.:bouncy:
