I went out to a couple of spots last night for some more "night hunting;" the first site was one where I have made a few nice finds in the past; I worked it pretty hard and managed a worn 1905-S Barber dime. Switched spots about halfway through, and was getting skunked in the silver department at this spot until I got that strong, sweet silver warble; I found a nice surprise at about 6" deep in my plug -- not one, but TWO Mercs, stacked one on top of the other. First time ever finding multiple silvers in one hole for me!
I also managed a few wheats and a small heart-shaped necklace pendant that I THINK is silver, but that has no markings on it. Is there a "test kit" for silver, like there is for gold?
I was mostly cherry-picking only the deeper (4" plus) high tones last night, so I didn't dig alot of clad, but was happy to put a few goodies in the pouch!
While I know I'm one of the few odd ones who prefers the digital screen, I will say that I found it interesting that the Barber rang up at 05-27 -- OUT of the ground! That's awfully low for a silver; a Merc out of the ground is usually around 04-29. It is worn and pretty thin, so I guess that's why it reads low. It actually was a rather tough target; it was about 3" from a rusty nail, and using the Pro coil, my machine wanted to pinpoint the nail; when I dug it, I figured that was what I heard (the nail,) it but I checked the hole once more, and there was still a target down there, about 2" to the side of the hole. Given how it was reading with the nail removed I was not impressed, but still -- I expanded the plug, and there was the Barber! I was shocked -- given that it was NOT deep and read so low...but I'll take it! First Barber this year; now, I gotta get that SLQ monkey off my back!
