A few explorer questions...

I've been using an explorer since last fall and have gotten out about 30-50 times with it so far. I am getting better at it each and every time out, but I still have some issues with it.

I've got some old house sites that are just farmers fields now. Is there a way for me to get around the constant iron nulling of the treshold sound? I know I can turn off iron mask, but then it's just constant screaming of iron signals. I've been to several farm fields like this where the house no longer sites anymore, just old bricks, glass, pottery, etc.

Also, how do you hunt near power lines? I was hunting a farm house yesterday and got some good finds(v nickel, silver war nickel, indian head penny, 10 wheats) but it sure was a pain. It was constantly providing me with false signals but eventually I could pinpoint good targets because they just screamed out at me, but I couldn't get any depth over 6" in their yard because the crosshairs were jumping all over the place the whole time. Rarely could I hear the treshold hum.

I tried it out today for about 10min at an old log cabin from the late 1800s and it was just constant iron nulling from something in the ground or in the air?? I really want to hunt this spot because there is an old pioneer log cabin foundation on the property as well.

On a brighter note, I did reach 500 coins found on the year today, ending the day with 510 for the calendar year so far :)

Thanks guys,
Brian

Oh yeah, I generally run my sensitivity at 19 and vary the iron mask based on where I am at what is in the ground. Today I had it around -12 or so, but generally keep it around -8.

I'm no expert but I did notice that when I run in auto-sens, the threshold comes back more often than when I'm in manual sens. I hunt around old homesites as well so I'm constantly in iron. I dug pennies 7-8" deep (and a friggin' padlock at a foot)so I don't think my depth was hurt. You might give it a try.

BTW, I dug my 1st 3 ring minie ball today. I'm not a relic hunter so it was luck but it was still pretty exciting.

Congrats on the 3ring mini ball. I got a few musket balls out in Missouri this past weekend and a king george II half penny that dates from 1727-1760 there as well. Incredible feeling, I must say.

I get great depth running at 19 sensitivity in MOST areas.... I have pulled many wheats out of the local park in the 8-10" range. Coins seem to get deep here in this soft Indiana soil.

Where is the option for manual sensitivity? I guess I have never noticed that option, or if I have, I have overlooked because of what the local explorer users have told me to do.

The shift buttons on the left. When you have your detect screen displayed, the top button raises the sens, bottom button lowers the sens, the middle button switches between auto sens and manual sens. When the cursor is rotating around the sens setting (number), you are in auto sens. When the cursor is not present, you are in manual. I would guess that you are always in manual. Try auto sens out for a while.

I read the manual twice before buying my Exp. I don't have anyone local to help me out. Just a lot of nice folks on the internet :)
Bill W told me to try out the auto sens for a while. I have to say that I definitely hear the threshold more often that way.

King George penny. Way cool, I've never found anything that old. 1847 LC is the oldest coin I've found.

In a place like that, you need to be patient,Have a smaller coil, start with a low sens.(8-10) to keep multi targets from over whelming you and work your way up on the sens.(10-1:geek:If you hear good sounds along with iron sounds you will either dig a coin and a piece of iron or just an old cut nail, cause of the sweet sound it has coming off the edges. Keep an eye on the curser at all times cause if you hear iron but it is not up tight left corner it could be a good target with lots of minerals inbetween, if depth icon says deep its possible it is being masked, if it is shallow halfway or higher most likely junk also keep checking digital # for a second opinon, 31 is iron on exp. xs...30 is silver and 28 either silver masked a bit or pennys etc...People seem to crank the machine up to max, when all they are doing is missing lots of good stuff because it is too powerful for that situation...too many targets to process in one swing...go slow and try diff angles to get the good sounds to repeat themselves. don't use high gain, I like 5 or 6...You might like auto sens. but I found it cut the sounds a bit short and didn't like it...double check all your settings and make sure you are on what you like cause once I lost my settings and didn't know it and used it not setup right...caused by bad battery connection, it went back to factory settings. always noise cancel also....I try not to use iron mask cause it will hide good sounds sometimes....this is where experience comes in...use deep only....

Thanks for the info. I completely forgot about the middle button. I always switch up and down in manual sens.

I'm still waiting for my first large cent. My oldest coin went from 1868 to that 1700s copper. I skipped over 100 years, haha.
