One day I got a call from an elderly couple I was friends with who attended the
First Congregational Church here in town. The woman said she lost her wedding
ring on their farm and couldn’t find it. She knew I liked to metal detect and asked if
I could look for it. I said I would get my friend and we would see if we could find it.
We went out with our Minelab detectors to their large farm and began detecting
around the usual places such as their driveway and around their house. We plied
her with more questions about where she may have lost it because we were taking
so much time looking for her ring. She said it is possible she lost it while working in her
vegetable garden. We detected in and around that but, again, we couldn’t find it.
We both finally gave up after a lot of time searching. The couple were standing
next to their compost pile and we explained that their farm is so large that it could
be anywhere. However, I figured I’d give it just one more try so I told them, in front of Stan,
“Let’s just pray that God would have mercy on us and help us find the ring.”
Immediately after that, I turned around, walked a straight line from the elderly couple, out into their field.
I put the detector coil to the ground and turned the detector on. I got a beep. I waved the coil
back and forth over that spot and continued getting a beep. The elderly couple saw I was getting
something as I knelt down in the field. They walked up and asked if I’d gotten something. I replied that I didn’t
know yet as I have to dig it up first.
Well, I dug it up and it was her wedding ring! Stan, with a scowl on his face said:
“It was luck.” I just smiled at him as I handed her the ring. We were greatly rejoicing
and laughing and praising God, except Stan.
