my vaquero has been repaired.apparently the thing that made it howl when turned on, was dirt and fine sand
on the inside according to the retailer i bought it from and if it happens again i have to send it back to tesoro
for them to fix.i always try to protect it from the rain, now obviously i have to protect it from all the elements.
i thought detectors were supposed to be sealed against these problems.taking it out into the real world is a no,no.
maybe i was a bit hasty selling minelab x terra 50 it's control box was better sealed, even if ,it did have acreen.
i'm thinking of running a thin bead of silicon around the joins and masking the speaker with tape.would this cause
condensation on the inside?should i leave a little air hole or hang it in the cupboard so it don't get hurt.blowfly

If it was me I'd just use and enjoy the detector and not worry about it. Here's why:

If you should have to send the detector in to Tesoro for repair, they'll fix it for free.

Yes, you'll have to spend a few bucks on postage to get it to Arizona. But the repair won't cost you and Tesoro will even pick up the tab for return postage.

Tesoro has a good turnaround time. They had mine back in the mail within a week of receiving it.

Plus if Tesoro gets your detector to fix they won't just blow out the sand and dirt, they'll fix the problem that's allowing it to get in in the first place.

I'd be real careful putting any substance on the detector. Tesoro says that unauthorized modificationss can void the lifetime warranty. Silicone around the seals probably wouldn't be considered an unauthorized mod, but I still wouldn't risk it without checking with Tesoro first.

thats good Blowfly ya got it back fast and was no major prob , I mentioned in ya humidity post about the gap on the face plate of the control housing's on my umax 's , is your V the same ..if so it would give easy entry for sand it would probly pay to fill it with blutac its harmless stuff

all of the control box's look the same to me,just different colours except the lobo, sand shark
and the tiger shark.basicly the same, some have more knobs than others, that's all.i'll probaly
do what marcomo suggested and hope it doesn't happen again.hh. blowfly see ya!

I've opened a couple of mine and haven't seen any noticable dirt or sand. I don't take heroic efforts to avoid it, but do try to always set it down on a decent spot with the control box upright. You might consider covering the box with a plastic bag when in extra dirty conditions?

hey bb,i've never opened mine i thought they were a sealed unit and opening them could void
warranty, however if it happens again,i'll be very carefull and clean it myself.if that don't work
then it goes back to tesoro.we're not prone to dust storms hear, cyclones yes, dust storms no!
and i do use a plastic bag when i think it's needed. blowfly hh see ya!

Hello Blowfly!

I had a problem a while back with my air conditioner in my camper van.
The bloody thing wouldn't turn on, no matter what...

We have a safety cut off circuit here at home,
and when ever I tried to switch on the air the electricity supply safety relay shut it self off.
I called in an aircon expert, and he went all over the thing, ___ found nothing!
Looking further he opened up a box that had a relay in it,
and it was heavily coated with fine Aussie red dust from the outback....
He blew out the fine dust, and bingo! Started first time we switched it on.

Yep, there was enough iron in that dust to allow a current to track to earth, showing up as an electrical leak
to the safety cut off switch!

It wouldn't take much of this conductive dust to collect onto a detector circuit board, and cause trouble for the detector!
