A detecting time question...................

Elton

New member
I am doing some research...... How long do you detect on average when you go detecting. What type of machine do you use mostly.

One hour, Two hours, Three hours, etc etc shorter or longer times too. 30 minutes, 8 hours you get the idea right ??

Your average time and what machine do you use ???

During the summer months I'm just basically a weekend warrior and typically hunt 4-5 hrs. per hunt. Come fall, I'll hunt quite a bit more often and 6-8 hrs. each time out.

I swing an SE everywhere but the tot-lots where I still prefer to use my X-terra 70 with a small coil.

Elton, I'm out pretty much exactly 4 hours every time I get out. Since my free time is very limited, I like to get a early start, get in my four hours and then get home so the wife gets her time with me too. I mostly hunt with tone id machines.

Also 4-5 hours, then take ( as in NEED) a break. Usually go out for 2-3 hrs more if I have the chance. MXT w 6 X10 DD coil most often used combo.

Have been using the XLT most of the summer using the ACE 250 with the big coil for wide open fields.
Also use the 5900 DI PRO SL ,MXT for some land hunts
Water hunting Wader and BHID and soon to be new Tiger Shark when it comes out.
Being retired I try to put in 2 hours early in the morning daily.
Water hunting and beach hunting can be a all day affair once a week.

I usually go for 2 hours That is the limit of my 9 year old son

Gold bug se, F5 and F2

Happy hunting
Bob

I usually hunt older house yards about 2 hours each time I go. I am 73 yrs old and have detected
since 1970. I use an xl pro with 6in coil. I have 8 other detectors but the xl pro is my favorite. Clay

I'm 73 also, and usually go bout 3 hrs at a whack, sometimes couple hunts a day, and usually at least 5 days a week, whatever my pacemaker will allow:detecting::garrett::detecting:

I get out out 2 to 3 hours after work. All depends how bad the mosquitos are. I use the Goldbug SE (Currently neing shipped back for repairs)

Elton, Usually 2 to 3 hours, but it depends a bit on the location. I'm mostly a dry land hunter, but get to the beach when I can (3 to 4 times a year if I'm lucky). Detectors range from Tesoros (good and light) to X Terra and Omega (also good and light). If the weather is good (ie. not too hot or cold) I might stay out a bit longer than 3 hours, but I would say my average time per hunt is two hours.

When I go out, its usually a 8 to 12 hour day for me. Unless I have my girlfriend with me and then its usually about 6 to 8 hours.
But, I do take about an hour of time to test certain setting and programs that I have been working on.

Hi EL , Very good question .

When I was living in the mid west and land hunting I could go for 8 hours and I was still using my old faithful Whites Prizm .
Since moving to P.R. I cant hunt as long due to heat , humidity and allergies , a couple of hours and Im packing it in .
I use an Ace on dry sand and an Excal in the water .
But any hunt is A Great Hunt .

I try to get in about 4 hours min. per hunt. If I am finding goodies will tend to stay longer. All depends upon the weather and
temp., and if I have to be someplace else.

Land hunting--
I use the detector that I have handy at the time, could be a vintage VLF/TR unit or a newer detector. Such as our Detectorpro Wader
or a Tesoro unit.

Water hunting, I stay until I get too cold to hunt or if I finish the swimming area. Average time min. 2-3 hours.. Unless it was an all day affair--
Hunt, take a break, go back and hunt some more.
The detector used is a Detectorpro Wader and yet to use White's Surfmaster PI Pro.

What is your average coin total and what do you find most of.. I am doing a research and could use the info from you...
Appreciate it, and thank you in advance .

Average about $5-6 per hunt and pennies is the most quantity of coins. Lots of people omit these but I dig and recover all of them.
In the north country if I find $1 $2 coins that will total up quickly.

:usmc:

It has been so hot here on the lower Salmon River in Idaho for so long this summer, I've done very little detecting, coin or gold nugget. Really don't care for mid 90's to as high as 107 degrees and sopping wet headphones.

I did put in a quick 30 minutes this morning before it got in the 80's with my BH Pioneer 505 at one spot I've always been curious about and besides all the trash, found one Zinc (same as trash) using the standard coil.

A couple weekends ago, I did use my White's GM V/SAT with the 4"X6" coil for a couple hours in the morning on some river bedrock until the sun got over the ridge quickly warming things up. Found small to larger pieces of lead (sinkers) in cracks and crevices but no gold. I'm tempted though to run my portable Dry Vac over the crevices to see if there is flour gold.

Come cooler weather, I'll start putting in more time again and will even detect in snow if the ground is not too frozen. In the last year, I'd say my GM V/SAT gets used about half of the time I spend detecting and my BH Pioneer 505 and Garrett Freedom II take up most of the other half but I do devote some time to the old Garrett Master Hunter ADS Groundhog. I do get a kick out of running that Old Timer and it will find lead in rock crevices but not as small as the GM V/SAT will find and you can ground balance it to find black sand pockets, something I have not yet attempted with the GM V/SAT though I have a black sand sample large enough to try it out on.

3 hours or more per hunt. Sometimes will do 2 times a day hunts at 2 or 3 hours per hunt. Average is about 3 hours a day.
Elton a good day on the beach is about 20 coins. A good day in the parks is about 50 coins. My coin % is: Quarters @ 17%, Dimes @18%, Nickels @10%, pennies @55%. Dollar value (total dollar value is @ $157.55) per hunt I have no idea?? just count the number of coins. Hope this helps? Happy Trails....Z
