A decent second MD

I have a Tesero Vaquero detector now but have been considering a second unit. I enjoy digging both coins and relics but trash areas give me the fits. Dont get me wrong I do like the Vaquero. It may get used on beaches possibly and with streams in the area it may get used there. I was considering the AT Pro, that comes in my budget for a new unit. The videos have shown the tones uses and the iron audio feature which I like. I am going to be 61 and am retired so I was also not looking for a major learning curve. I am not looking to start a debate or anything like that. Maybe some one has these two units and can give an opinion on the AT Pro finding good or rejecting bad targets.

Thanks

I forgot to mention ....some mentioned to me a WHites MXT Pro would be a good second unit.

Thanks again

I wont recommend a specific detector but what I will say is that you have a many great options. With help from these forums and other internet info you should be able to find the perfect unit. IMHO I would find a detector with a good reputation, a good warranty and lots of available accessories and coils. Im sure you wont go wrong in your decision. Good luck and HH. Matt

Since you already have a light weight detector - I take it that you would not want something much heavier so I would suggest that you keep your eyes open for a good deal on a gently used Minelab Xterra 705......you can probably pick one up for around $500 or less depending on the number of coils that it comes with.....check out the Xterra forum here at findmall.

i have an at pro and use it as my main machine. the 8.5x11 dd stock coil makes the machine feel on the heavier side. if weight of the machine is a factor for you and you end up deciding on the at pro, then i would highly recommend getting the 5x8dd coil. i can swing this thing all day with the small coil, plus it seperates/pinpoints targets better. plus if it starts raining all you have to worry about is the headphones, unless you have the submersible ones.

as far as the MXT Pro, i see a lot of people around here(Northern VA) using them. i saw a guy dig a pretty nice large cent today. i saw him digging the hole for about 10 minutes and he walked over to my buddy and started showing it to him. i walked past his hole on the way to check out the coin and i was impressed with the depth of the machine. he had a garrett pro pointer, and i heard him turning it on and off while digging(i only use 1 ear phone) so i know the find was close to the bottom of that hole.

there are tons of good machines out there. just do your research and ask specific questions to users in the specified forums. im sure you will find one you will enjoy and will suit your needs

Hi dlh, since you are in the early stage of shopping for a second detector, and already have a Tesoro, you are probably aware you have the Best Warranty and Service to be had, I would suggest you wait just a bit, and see what Tesoros' new "Outlaw" has to offer. It's already caused a bit of commotion with lots of comments and speculation. It appears not have actually reached the "diggers" yet due to shipping (box problems) but overall, if it is a keeper it will come at at very ecconomical price with 3 coils included. As long as you are shopping, it would make sense to give those fired up Tesoro diggers time to dig some holes with the new "Outlaw" before you commit $ elseware. Get the pros and cons of of the newest Tesoro, and then decide. HH, Charlie

Nothing wrong with an AT-Pro. The water proof feature is a big plus even if it's just for rain. Easy learning curve, it's really not a complex machine. If requested Garrett has been known to sell them with the 5x8 I've heard. That's the way I'd get it if you're in trash or worried about balance. They have very good customer service as well but only Tesoro has a lifetime warranty.

MXT or MXT Pro's are great detectors. However, very heavy IMHO compared to many other choices. I'm crowding 71 and while I really like the capabilities of my MXT, It's not my first choice when planning to swing for extended periods. Younger folks may not agree with this assessment, but those with older arms and shoulders will probably agree.

I second that and especiallly with the 6" coil it is great in trashy sites. I tried a vaquero in the same parks and it drove me nuts. or you can put the 5.75 coil on the vaquero and you should be good. HH

I tried several brands of detectors which included

Minelabs, Whites, Tesoro, Garrett and the most recent Fisher.
All these companies make good machines and alot depends on
personal preference.

Of the above brands, I thought the AT GOLD was a good machine but
wasn't likeing the tones. The detector is nice and light weight.

You can't complain about the Teroro line up as you probably already
know their machines are nice and light. I just wish they had a machine
that had ground balance with TID.

I just started swinging the Fisher F70 and I think it's a dandy!
Very well balanced, great features, and lightweight to boot!

For me, it's just the ticket and I'm happy that other folks on the
Fisher F series board gave good recommendations for it.

I really like the machine and the tones are crisp and really
easy to pinpoint. If you have a local Fisher dealer, check it
out. You just might fall in love with the machine!
