A days detecting in south Wales, UK

I had a day off work today so joined Roman Ray bright and early somewhere in South Wales. As soon as we were booted and armed Ray took about 5 steps and produced a Half Crown which just misses out on being silver by a year! To make up for that he took another 5 steps and does it again but this time with a 50% silver two florin. In the meantime I was busy finding a mountain of 303's and a nice nick George copper penny. The soil is really kind on this farm due to it being a high clay content - hardly any oxygen in it due to the clay.

My next find that amused me somewhat was another flaming pidgeon ring that unfortunately for Percy still had his leg in it! I never seem to fail to find these and this one was a 2000 model! We changed fields after a spot of elevensies and then again and again as the fields seemed to be covered in modern night soil.

Another field and up pops a 10 Ore of Sweden. why would that be in the middle of a Welsh field? Had me confused at first as I could see small writing with a Scandanavian twist to it - then of course I saw the date of 1989 and promptly remembered why I need glasses!

Into another field and Ray was now using my trusty Muskateer as the pylons were causing havoc with his DFX. He got on with it pretty well and was suprised at how loud the signals come through on it. A great machine that is now dirt cheap on Fleabay if you are lucky enough to find one.

I concentrated along the hedge line where I figured the night soil would not be so plentiful and was rewarded with a silver ring, with what could be an opal or more likely a mood stone it in it. I was happy though as silver is silver and I'll take it, or more to the point the wife will take it when she sees it!

Near the gate I found a tiny grassy knoll that reminded me of one near a Book Depositry I once visited. Anyway on the knoll I proceeded to find 6 coins I think of varying ages. The oldest was a George II halfpenny.

Not long after this into yet another field and I had a bone handled penknife and the usual smattering of buttons, more 303's, shrapnal and the ubiquitous coke cans. My final find of note was what I am hoping to be a silver stud.

By 5.30 we were knackered and the drive home to drop Ray off was eventful as I almost killed a kid in Porth! I was literally sat at the lights, allowed a man to cross, the light went amber, then green and I started to accelerate. Junior decides he's going to run a foot in front of my Landy resulting in me slamming on the brakes. Thank God I was only crawling or he would have been gone. I am not proud to say I did hurl a bit of abuse at him. My heart has literally just stopped thumping now. A kind of adrenaline boost I could do without.

Anyway a great day, with cracking company in beautiful country side - what more could you want?

Cheers
Neil

Cheers gents.

Nightsoil is basically additional soil thats been added to the land and tends to be full of rubbish bits of tin foil, cans, etc

Speak English!:yikes::yikes: The cheek of it my young upstart - only the Queens own grammer here in blighty!

One must dash as my manservant has just ironed The Times for me, and we have cucumber sandwiches with Lord Asquith and Price Charles scheduled in the afternoon.

Nice finds - some of those coins are in beautiful condition. In my trips to England, I never find coins in such nice shape. I guess the type of soil and the amount of fertilizer used plays a big role in all of this. Thanks for explaining nightsoil - I thought this is what night hawks dig in (I wish they were cursed with bits of foil and other modern trash).

I enjoy your colorful prose - keep it up! It forces me to use my English to American translator. I hope you keep posting your finds - always very interesting. My regards to you, Lord Asquith & Prince Charles. Happy Hunting.
