A couple of questions regarding the Coinstrike.

Hello everybody! Looks like I'll be getting a new used Coinstrike in a couple of days and was kinda curious about a couple of things. The first concerns the sweep speed and ground handling. I've read that it likes a faster sweep speed and that it can handle bad ground. Would you say that it just might be a 4 filter detector, or something altogether different? How would it compare to a DFX? XLT? The second question concerns small, low conductive targets. I've done some tests with other detectors operating in the same general frequency range and have found that some, especially in AM mode, would give asurprisingly strong response to my 3 grain (that's GRAIN, not gram) test nugget. Often the sensitivity had to be jacked up, but it worked. The reason I ask is that I'm also getting a Fisher goldstrike and it seems to be the evil twin of the Coinstrike. My thinking is a one-two punch for prospecting and, maybe freshwater beach hunting. The Goldstrike could be used for tiny, subgrainstuff.. and the Coinstrike for deep lunkers. So.. whaddya say? ..Willy.

HI Willy,

It will be intersting to see your results with the Coinstrike for gold hunting! It is quite sensitive to small foil, much more so than say a CZ-5 or 70 but of course not quite in the same league as the MXT. Even tho they are sold as coin machines the digital Fishers have very good sensitivity to a wide range of sizes and conductivities using the disc mode.

Bad ground is generally not a problem with the Coinstrike, it is one of the better VLF's in the ground handling department. Whether or not it will handle the high mineralization generally associated with gold bearing areas in the west I cannot say but, operating at a lower frequency than the dedicated gold detectors should be a plus. A DD coil certainly would help but we will never see one for the Coisntrike.

In some areas hot rocks can be a problem. Of course it depends on the makeup of the rock and the background soil matrix. Around here in hot rock infested areas the C$ will track them out and after locking the GB very few give a signal. However, in other areas certain types signal like a large non-ferrous target and cannot be eliminated. No better or worse than most VLF gold machines in that department.

Would I use for one nugget hunting? IMO it deserves a serious tryout. It very well could be a good choice on those deep lunkers if the ground permits.

I used a CZ6a a number of years back to prospect in AK's Arctic Circle area and found a heap of gold with it. This was in ground that the other VLF's couldn't work and after 2 Minelab SD 2200d's had stomped it for a month. I could only get down to 2-3 grains, but there was plenty of big gold to make up for that. Since the ground handling is said to be good, I've got my hopes up. The areas I hunt have a whole slew of hotrocks that, in disc mode, give off a solid iron reading. Using a PI there is a nightmarish experience. There's also the Canadian money aspect.. probably best hunted with a biga$$ magnet. Need good iron resolution. [attachment 41136 Will_bigsNugget2.jpg] This is my first ever REAL nugget, found with my CZ6a w. 10.5" coil about a foot down.. 2 oz of pure detecting pleasure. [attachment 41137 Will_slittlenugget2.jpg] This is the second one, 10 1/2 DWT. It's hard not to get hooked when you're popping horse choker nuggets.. I'm ruint for life. ..Willy.

I know you will love both the coin-strike and gold-strike.All you have to do is give them a chance. The gold-strike is the only detector I have found that will track through hot rocks and still find small gold. The gold-strike is no longer in production so you are lucky you found one.

Right now I'm trying to find a way of knocking out the low tone via something that plugs into the headphone jack and filters it out. That would clear up one of the major beefs re. the Goldstrike. ..Willy.
