A couple of questions about the F70

The other day I got caught in a bit of rain, not a downpour and not a heavy rain at all.

My question is: If rain water got into the brains of the unit, what do you suggest I do? The unit turns on and seems fine, it'll tell me when my coil is over a target, but it doesn't show the line over what the target is. It does show the VDI number though. Also, when I use the pinpoint feature the machine bogs down and the noise fades out.

My other question is: Could it possibly be that I need to change the batteries? I've had the machine for a few weeks and it still has the original batteries that I started with. According to the battery meter it still shows the batteries as being good. Is the battery meter a reliable tool for me to gage the strength of the batteries?

Thank you for any input you may have, I appreciate your time and response!

Sorry about your potential problem.

First of all, remove the batteries.

Turn the F70 control box (not the battery box), face down with a paper towel close to the face. If after an hour there is no water on the paper towel, chances are good you are okay.

If there is water on the towel, I would take the control box and place it over a light bulb to keep it warm, not hot, for a few days. Retry the test for paper towel water drips.

If there is still a problem, I hope you are under warranty.

I think your batteries are probably still okay.

Please let us know what happens.

Thank you for the reply! I'm in the process of trying your suggestion. I will keep you posted, thanks again!

Wouldn't be a bad thing to put some fresh batteries in just in case one of them went bad. Also, have you tried a factory reset?

If those don't work, FJS440's suggestion is spot on. Good luck!

Also it wouldn't be a bad idea to prevent this kind of problem in the future by carrying a small shower cap in your pocket for those kind of moments, like the old saying an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

WhatTheBeep- Yes, I have tried a factory reset a couple of times. I really think that rain water made its way into the unit because the face of the unit fogs up a little. Hopefully the suggestion that fjs440 had given me works out for me.

still looking 52- Carrying a shower cap is a great idea! Thanks for sharing it with me!

It seems to be working better, but the pinpoint feature is still acting up. It seems to act sluggish and tired. What I mean is, when I push the pinpoint button it works for a second and then the usual noise it makes bogs down and doesn't work as it should.

I took the advice of fjs440 and took the batteries out, placed a paper towel under the face of the unit, instead of using a lightbulb I placed the unit near my fireplace (making sure the heat wasn't too excessive). I even installed fresh batteries too.

One other thing in case you haven't... I would unplug the coil connector from the control box and make sure it's thoroughly dry too, and plug it back in snugly. If it's still not good, might need a trip to the doctor (I hope not).

I also did that too. Thank you for the suggestion!

I was able to get out today with the unit and locate my first silver using this machine, then I find a second Merc just a foot away! I found a 1943 Merc, then a 1945 Merc that was stuck to a 1942 Wheatie! I am super stoked to be on the board with the Mercs!

UPDATE: I put the control box in a ziploc bag and filled it with rice to help dry it out. I'll let it sit in there for a couple of days. I'll hunt with my F2 in it he meantime.

Sounds liked you ducked the bullet.
I was going to recommend the "rice bag treatment", but you have already done that. Storing with a few desiccant packs on the control box for the next few weeks would probably help.

Congrats

I was still having slight issues with it and it's been sitting in a bag of rice for about three days now. I'm on the road now (truck driver) so when I return home I will fire it back up and give it a try. It still works but the pinpoint feature isn't as sharp as it was, it actually bogs down. Hopefully it works when I return home.

Not sure if you fixed your detector yet but what 'Id do is take a hair dryer ,set set it on low and warm the unit up until the condensation disappears.

He sent it in already, they fixed it for free, replaced it maybe even, now it is working perfectly and he is happy.

As REVIER said, I sent it in to Fisher Labs and they took care of me. Unfortunately, I haven't hunted in over a month. I have been busy at work and with life in general. I'm hoping to be able to get out tomorrow though as I finally have a free day.
