A couple of old finds

Went out this morning to my favorite farm. Thanks to hurricane Irene the ground was soft enough to finally get a good hunt in. The first coin I found was a 1864 2 cents nickel and 5 minutes later pops out this coin thats possibly older than that. This coin is made of copper and is stamped S & M FARMS. Its about the size of a nickel. I have come to a conclusion that this is how the slaves were paid but, I'm not exactley sure. If anyone has any insight on these type of coins, please feel free to comment. I am interested in finding out more about this coin and if others have found similar coins from your town. Happy hunting.

Very nice! That may be a picker's check. When workers were picking produce in the fields, for each basket or crate they filled, they would be handed a check. I assume they were traded in later for money. Congrats.

Nice find's Roger.
