A couple more hrs on the sov GT...... I'm starting to get it... but then I'm not......

I hunted an old hs football field again.. ( first time with the G T ).... I really just wanted to listen to the sounds and wasn't expecting too much !! Got fooled alot on pieces of alum that sounded as a high coin signal.. ( no big deal their )... Secondly.. when sweeping, it will sound off as a hi tone.. then go blank ?? Further sweeps of the spot gets no signal at all.. I know this field has to have at least one old class ring, but over all these yrs of hunting it, I still have not come across it.. but I think the GT will score it for me...

I think once the meter gets put on the detector, that may help raise the odds in my favor..... The coins that I did dig were every bit of 6 inchs and beyond.. Got 2 nickles.. 1 dime and a few pennys..

More to come..Mark ( ohio )

Sounds good so far. Keep moving forward. I sold my meter last year and now I regret it. I know the tones pretty well. This is my third hunting season with my GT. I normally use a Sun-Ray S-5 coil because Im awful at pinpointing my 10" Tornado. I put almost four hours on the GT today and found nothing but zincs. Im still getting used to the slow recovery speed. Anyway...HH. Matt

Hi Mark,

The meter will make a big difference in learning the tones. It made a world of difference for me. As far as the "hi tone.. then go blank" may be the fact that there is a good target next to iron. The GT will null (goes blank = no threshold / no noise) over iron objects. Then when you move off the iron near the good target you get a high tone and the threshold will come back. This only happens when you are in DISC mode. In all-metal everything will come through. Best of luck and swing slow. - Jim

Hi Mark,
Aluminum doesnt sound like a coin, next time you dig up a piece of aluminum toss a coin on the ground and compare the sounds so you can hear the difference. the aluminum will sound a bit lower, depending on its size.
A high tone then going blank can indicate too high a sens setting/too fast a sweep speed and your getting a false signal, or as epl stated could be a coin next to iron. if you recheck and it disappears completely with no blanking, its a false signal. if iron, the blanking will remain.
Also the Sov will blank on ANY target disced out, not just iron. depends on where your disc is set. small to medium iron will blank on 0 disc setting but larger iron can/will give a high tone/ coin signal.

Mark,

Keep at it. It will pay off, it takes time, but it's worth it. I put a meter on my GT, been using the rig for close to six months now. Twisted aluminum still fools me; I figure I just have to get used to it, because it sounds like gold sometimes; lawn mowers can really chew up aluminum and it can sound like anything. I'm getting to know the sounds, but there is still a lot to learn. Conditions make a difference too. Soil here is dry, and that means hard to dig because of hard soil - clay at that much of the time. I found about $4 in clad today, but I was cherry picking, only getting what was on or near the surface. Part of that is because I had such a large area to cover, and it was in the sun. The S-5 will probably go with me to this same location because there is a lot of trash - wine bottle caps, beer bottle caps, and pull tabs, plus good stuff. I used the 10" tornado today, and that's my standard coil most of the time, but I have a 12" and a 5" to use if needed. Don't be afraid to experiment, and try pretty much anything suggested until you find something that you like. Even then, keep trying different things. Keep at it, and don't give up.

Best of luck,

lol that is what happens when I am in a hurry. Neil is correct in his entire post - Nulling will happen over ANY metal that is disced out not just iron like I mentioned. Also I should of added with what Neil mentions (sens setting/too fast a sweep speed) that this is another possibility and can make the detector null out. That is why I mentioned (in my hurried post) to sweep slow. For now, keep the sensitivity in auto until you gain some experience. I was using manual sensitivity when I first started using the GT and couldn't figure out what was going on. (nulling out) Check out this post below. This opened my eyes to what I was walking over at first when I first started using my GT. Then read what I found shortly after with a one way signal. if you run into this situation...dig that baby up. gotta run again lol best of luck in the field - Jim

I'm still using the auto sens setting and have the disc set to 0..... My sweep speed is as slow as I could possibly hunt............ So to reinteriate.... heres what happened again as I was sweeping the ground a hi tone signal would show itself. upon futher examination going back to find the signal there was NADA... Nothing.. could not find anything no matter what direction I came at it with....

So I have to believe it is a larger piece of Iron that leached into the ground and the tail end of it is whats giving the hi tone signal............ DO YOu agree???

Thanks again men.

HH Mark ( ohio )................................ BTY.. I'm in N E Ohio anybody close ( say within an hrs drive who is really proficiant with a G T )... might want to get together and see how good this thing really is...

Mark,
Jim mentioned the all metal mode, good idea there, check those disappearing targets in all metal pinpoint and see what you find.

now in disc mode, if its iron and large and your sov is seeing it, you will get a higher tone or it will null. it shouldnt just disappear (I suspect your thinking its blending into the ground and the detector is reading it as part of the ground).

believe Jim when he talks about a slow sweep, these sovs require about the slowest sweep on any machine to isolate up a target.

another idea would be that the next time you encounter this(in disc mode), hold the coil to the left or right of where you heard the signal, let the coil rebalance to the ground(give it 10secs or so), then try resweeping the area. to much area at to fast a sweep speed can overwhelm the sov. a shortened sweep helps the sov seperate up targets and ID them better.

what your encountering sure sounds like falsing to me. I run into this on the beach mostly because I run my sens as high as I can to get the best depth and as I hunt my sweep speed will increase, so the falsing tells me to slow it down....

Mark iam in my 3rd year with the Sov GT and i still find the sounds close like clad and silver coins or pull tabs and gold some say they can hear the difference but not all can do that i guess it depends on there hearing and that is why i use the 180 meter believe me it helps in a very trashy field or even a beach give the machine time and you will be finding good stuff , lately i have been using all metal mode if i think i have a good target ill switch over to disc to check it if it,s iron ill pass it up that works great , swing low n slow . Mark, I'm within a mile east or so east of Hopkins Airport, just on the east side of the Ford plant if you know where that is. Actually you probably know where 71 and 480 meet. I'm within a mile south east of that. If you want to hook up some time drop me a PM and I'll take you to a few of my old haunts where silver still lingers.

I don't find can slaw to be much of a problem in terms of false coin hits. Only rarely do I dig a piece of junk like that that was giving me a decent coin signal. Pay attention to the sound and ID as you sweep around it from different angles. Often things like screw caps will give a warbly sick sort of sound as they bounce between say 176 or 178 and 180. Usually they sound good one way but sick the other. Have to be careful, though, as super shallow coins right near the surface can do this because they are overloading the machine. Raise the coil a little bit and see if it still sounds sick or warbly. If it does then it's probably junk or a screw cap. Those screw caps gave me the most trouble when I was learning the GT, but can slaw never really seems to give me a problem. That stuff is often oddly shaped, so if I'm ring hunting I won't dig anything that changes by say 3 digits or more depending on which way you sweep over it from different sides. Every time I dig those signals they are odd shaped pieces of junk.

Try setting your SENS arround 1 oclock. When you get more aclimated, move your SENS up. In trash low SENS so you can hear good targets next to junk. That is how I started to figure the machine out.

Mark (ohio) thank you a lot for posting your experience, This is an ecxellent information for all of us the new users of this fantastic machine. I'm wondering now about all those targets that i left behine thinking of bab or trash targets, I will defenetly go back to recheck that area of my park because the other day I find a canadian 10 cent cilver coin that is was close to a nail and aluminium but in my case I dig it out because of the solid soung of the aluminium.
Nice finds and keep up the great job of hunting, please continue to post your experiences for our oinstruction.
Thank you!

Mark,in the Virginia comp hunt Saturday I used a meter on my Elite and it gave me at least 3-4 extra deep silver dimes on each hunt. The Sovereign was finding silver dimes up until the end of each hunt, after most people gave up before the time limit. Thanks Ron
