A Couple Detecting Questions

Bottleman

New member
Hello all, I asked before if it was ok to detect in cemeteries and found out that it was a BIG NO-NO to the hobby! In the area that I live in I have found that it is ok to hunt in ball fields and local parks with out getting permission and I was wondering if it was ok to detect around churches as long as you fill in your holes properly. This meaning that you don

It's probably a good idea to get permission to hunt churches. I have never been turned down. A lot of churches have someone living on site in a house, or.....look on the large sign in front of each church for a phone number and name. It pays to carry a cell phone with you on all hunts, literally!

How to keep from killing the grass in dry weather? Do not cut plugs!!!!!
Three little words, Pinpoint- Pinpoint- Pinpoint.
Learn to pinpoint accurately, do not cut plugs !!!!!
Probe shallow coins up to 4 inch's and pry out.
There is a digger made that helps prevent the killing the grass if done right.
Practice and more practice on retrieving with a small as possible hole.
Good Luck.

Carry a canteen of water with you. Cut plugs only if possible and fill the hole about half full of water before replacing the plug.

AAH, that's the easy way Stan. One of the best ways is to probe and locate the coin, then with a knife, cut a slit down alongside the coin, move the knife side to side to widen the slit, with a long-handled spoon pop the coin into the slit and fish the coin out, then step on the slit and mash it closed.

Yeah if it's Catholic you'll have to speak to a father or the Mother Superior. had to do that a time or two. Even offered them 10%. But they said that wasn't necessary unless I found a strongbox full of money. But since churches are private property and not public property it's always best to ask permission.

Thanks for all of the information. I am new to this hobby and cut plugs just because it is the best way that I know of to locate the coin and to be sure I will get it with only digging one hole. I will have to try to get permission from the churches too before I detect. I am mainly a bottle digger as I have said before and by far the best way to get really rare bottles is by knocking on doors and trying to get permission to dig there outhouse. It takes a lot of guts to try to convince someone you have never met before to dig a five foot deep hole in there yard but in the end it pays off. Do you guys ever try to get permission to detect people

WE have a group of bottle diggers here who came through our neighboorhood years ago and done pretty well. They go down to the courthouse and search the old plat maps for all the houses that had outhouses and then blanket the neighborhoods asking permission, then they probe the pits to see what is there.
