A couple detecting in the surf observations....

Went out in the surf just to practice my skills for when the spring crowds appear.....

I'm sure everyone else knows this, but it has just come to my attention.............I've just never payed attention to this before...

In knee to mid thigh deep water on the sea side of the first sand bar w/ waves breaking from my waist to low chest the top half of the water column is going towards the beach, and a fairly strong current going away from the beach at my feet.......... My thinking is anything lost in this area is quickly carried out and deposited in the next trough.....

I moved out to the second sand bar, waist + deep and waves breaking shoulder high the water was more forceful in the top half but less current at foot level....(taller water column less perceived current) So out here things (jewelery) should start to come to rest....

I didn't find anything good today, some clad in thigh deep water that was shallow and clean and some deep buried bottlecaps and iron..(pi, no disc) Out deeper some pulltabs and unrecoverables... (no matter how much I dug just couldnt get it to stay in the scoop... ) I need a bigger scoop w/ more drainage....

Just thinking outloud here but if anyone has any insight or wisdom i'm all ears.........

A hollow ring most the time doesn't move very much. it sinks and stays. However I have found rings that have washed up. Coins on the other hand get washed around a lot. The rings I have found that have washed in do have a flat surface. A signet ring and a 1901 class ring come to mind.

Also that movement isnt alway back out to sea.... depending on the wind and waves those cuts are from longshore drifts where the movement is with the beach making cuts like rip tides. Then you have days of pushing sand or pullling sand. A lot of targets come from beach drops that move into the water as well once their weight cant be moved it settles only to be move again with a lot of sand movement because it quickly is covered up or sinks depending on if its a surface target. I noticed the same thing about rings with surface.... other wise i agree if its a heavy ring it wont move much without a LOT of help. Ive never found a great deal on top of the sand bar unless its a recent drop just because its hard pan normally and has to find a low spot or be heavy. The better hunters seem to know this stuff and where to look. They get out there in a hour and find more than me in 8.
